Description
The 2019 Antinori Solaia is one of Tuscany’s most iconic Super Tuscans, crafted from the estate’s finest hillside parcels in the heart of Chianti Classico. Powerful yet impeccably polished, it brings together classic Bordeaux varieties with Tuscan soul in a wine built for both contemplation and the cellar. In this outstanding vintage, Solaia shows its trademark combination of intensity, precision, and graceful structure that has made it a reference point for collectors worldwide.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Solaia reveals a deep, saturated ruby color with purple highlights at the rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is intricate and layered: ripe blackcurrant, black cherry, and plum mingle with notes of violet, graphite, and dried Mediterranean herbs, supported by nuances of cedar, tobacco leaf, dark chocolate, and sweet baking spices from fine French oak.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, firmly structured red with a refined, velvety texture. Flavors of cassis, blackberry, and wild cherry are framed by vivid acidity and tightly knit, ripe tannins, giving the wine both richness and tension. Subtle notes of espresso, licorice, and mineral undertones emerge with air, building toward a long, elegant, and savory finish. Still primary and youthful, the 2019 has excellent aging potential; under proper cellaring it should evolve beautifully for 15–25 years, gaining in complexity and tertiary character.
Production
Solaia is sourced from a select, south- to southwest-facing portion of the renowned Tignanello estate in the gently rolling hills of the Chianti Classico zone in Tuscany. The vineyards sit on well-drained, stony, limestone- and marl-rich soils that naturally limit vigor and concentrate flavor, with significant day–night temperature swings preserving aromatics and freshness. Grapes (predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, with a smaller portion of Cabernet Franc) are harvested by hand in small crates, allowing strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, with careful maceration to extract fine tannins and color without harshness. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a high proportion new) for an extended period, with separate lots matured and then blended to achieve Solaia’s signature balance of power, elegance, and aromatic depth.
Food & Serving
This 2019 Solaia is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes such as dry-aged bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, venison, or roasted game birds. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, porcini risotto, and mature, hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or aged pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to allow the aromatics and structure to fully emerge. Decanting is strongly recommended—at least 1–2 hours for young bottles—to soften the tannins and let the complex bouquet unfold in the glass.
Producer
The Antinori family has been making wine in Italy for over six centuries, with documented activity in Florence dating back to 1385, making them one of the oldest and most influential wine families in the world. From their historic base in Tuscany, Antinori helped redefine Italian wine in the late 20th century, pioneering the Super Tuscan movement with groundbreaking wines like Tignanello and later Solaia. Introduced in the late 1970s, Solaia quickly became a flagship international red, showcasing how Cabernet-based blends could express Tuscan terroir at the highest level. Today, Marchesi Antinori is widely regarded as a benchmark producer, with estates across Italy and beyond, and a long track record of critical acclaim and top scores for Solaia in particular.
