The 2018 Tua Rita Per Sempre Syrah is one of Tuscany’s benchmark expressions of Syrah, marrying Mediterranean warmth with serious structure and depth. Born from the coastal hills around Suvereto, this inky, powerful red has earned cult status and some of the highest critical praise for any Italian wine from the 2018 vintage. Per Sempre (“forever”) is crafted in very limited quantities and represents the purest, most intense Syrah in the Tua Rita range.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Per Sempre Syrah is almost opaque, with a dense, ink-black core and a deep violet rim that hints at its concentration and youth. The nose is immediately expressive and layered: black pepper, ripe blackcurrant and blackberry, graphite and tar lead the way, supported by notes of violets, dark chocolate, smoked meat and a subtle Mediterranean herb character. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, mouth-filling Syrah with impressive depth and precision. Rich black fruits—cassis, black plum and blackberry compote—are wrapped in firm yet polished tannins and a solid, architectural structure. The texture is velvety but never heavy, lifted by fresh acidity and a long, powerful, spicy finish with echoes of cracked pepper, licorice, tobacco and warm earth. This is a wine built for the long haul: while already generous in its youth, it will reward patient cellaring over 10–15+ years, developing further complexity, softness in the tannins and more savory, gamey nuances.

Production
Per Sempre comes from Tua Rita’s estate vineyards around Suvereto on the Tuscan coast, an area defined by warm days, cooling maritime breezes and mineral-rich, often clay- and gravel-based soils that give Syrah both ripeness and tension. The grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal maturity, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table to ensure only perfectly healthy, concentrated fruit makes it into the final blend. In the cellar, the wine is vinified with great attention to preserving fruit purity and extracting fine tannins—typically involving temperature-controlled fermentation and an extended maceration—before being aged in high-quality oak (often French barriques) to build complexity, texture and age-worthiness without overwhelming the natural character of the Syrah and the Tuscan terroir.

Food & Serving
The 2018 Per Sempre Syrah is a superb partner for richly flavored, savory dishes: think Tuscan-style bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised lamb shanks, venison, wild boar ragù, grilled ribeye, or dishes with black pepper, rosemary and thyme. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano, mature Parmigiano-Reggiano or other firm, nutty cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux or Syrah stems to allow the wine to open up. Decanting is strongly recommended—give it at least 1–2 hours if drinking now to soften the tannins and release the full aromatic spectrum; even longer doesn’t hurt for those who enjoy a more expansive, layered profile.

Tua Rita was founded in 1984 when Rita Tua and her husband Virgilio purchased a small property in Suvereto with just two hectares of vines, with no grand ambition beyond tending a high-quality family vineyard. Their meticulous, hands-on work in the vineyard and cellar quickly garnered attention, propelling Tua Rita into the ranks of Tuscany’s cult producers and helping to redefine what the coastal Maremma could achieve with Bordeaux and Rhône varieties. As demand grew, the estate gradually expanded to around 30 hectares by 2014. After Virgilio’s passing in 2010, their daughter Simena and her husband, Stefano Frascolla, took over day-to-day management while preserving the estate’s artisanal ethos. Today Tua Rita is recognized internationally for its intensely characterful, critically acclaimed wines—Per Sempre Syrah among them—which regularly receive some of the highest scores awarded to Italian wines in their respective vintages.
