Description

The 2018 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Magnum is a benchmark Napa Valley estate wine presented in a generous 1.5L format—perfect for collectors, special occasions, and long-term cellaring. Sourced from the historic Spottswoode Estate on the western edge of St. Helena, this Cabernet is known for its poise: full, ripe, and richly layered, yet never heavy or overbearing. The 2018 vintage continues Spottswoode’s legacy, uniting classic Napa opulence with a sense of precision and freshness that has made this wine one of the most admired Cabernets in the region.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon shows a deep, opaque garnet to midnight-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is expressive and complex, unfolding with violets, lavender and potpourri alongside pure cassis, black cherry and dark plum. Layers of dark chocolate, mocha, graphite, and a touch of cedar and cigar box emerge with air, giving a distinctly refined and noble character. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a polished, velvety texture and beautifully integrated acidity that keeps the wine lively and lifted. Flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry are wrapped in notes of anis, savory licorice, baking spices and a chalky, mineral edge. The tannins are fine, firm and powdery—providing grip without harshness—and the finish is long, cool and composed, with that signature soft, dusty, clay-like texture. In magnum, this 2018 has excellent aging potential: expect it to evolve gracefully over 15–25 years, gaining further aromatic complexity and silkier tannins with time in the cellar.

Production
Spottswoode Estate sits on the western side of St. Helena in Napa Valley, where alluvial clay and gravel soils from the Sulphur Creek series provide excellent drainage and natural vine balance. Cooling marine breezes funneled between Spring Mountain and the Mayacamas range moderate the warm Napa days, allowing the fruit to ripen slowly and evenly while preserving acidity and aromatic nuance. The 42-acre estate is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by small blocks of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that may contribute to the final blend. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and sorted for quality before a meticulous vinification in temperature-controlled tanks. The wine then ages in high-quality French oak barrels, a significant portion new, to build structure and complexity while remaining focused on purity of fruit and a sense of place.

Food & Serving
This 2018 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Magnum is a natural match for refined, flavorful dishes such as dry-aged ribeye, roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, braised short ribs, venison, or duck with dark fruit reductions. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, aged hard cheeses like Comté or Pecorino, and dishes featuring earthy mushrooms or black olives. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to showcase its aromatic detail and silky texture. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is recommended—especially from magnum—to allow the wine to open fully; as it matures, a shorter decant of 30–60 minutes will help it unfurl while preserving its more delicate tertiary notes.

Producer
Founded in 1882, Spottswoode is one of Napa Valley’s great heritage estates, renowned for producing some of the region’s most elegant and ageworthy Cabernets. The estate, located just west of downtown St. Helena, has been stewarded by the Novak family for decades and is now led by second-generation sisters Beth Novak Milliken and Lindy Novak. Spottswoode was an early pioneer of organic and conscientious farming in Napa, and its estate Cabernet Sauvignon is widely considered a reference point for classically styled Napa Cabernet that combines concentration with finesse. Consistently lauded by top critics and collectors alike, Spottswoode has earned a place among the elite producers of the region, with its wines regularly achieving high scores and long, graceful aging trajectories.
