Description
The 2018 Rainer Heil Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese Trocken is a rare, highly concentrated dry Riesling from one of Mosel’s most prized steep-slope vineyards. Crafted from painstakingly selected, late-harvested berries, it unites Beerenauslese intensity with a remarkably precise, dry finish. This is a collector’s white that showcases the depth, longevity, and finesse that only old-vine Mosel Riesling and meticulous craftsmanship can deliver.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a luminous, deep lemon-gold color, hinting at its rich concentration and late-harvest origins. The nose is intense and layered, with aromas of ripe apricot, candied citrus peel, yellow plum, and dried pineapple, wrapped in nuances of acacia blossom, honeycomb, wet slate, and a touch of smoky mineral.
On the palate, the wine is powerful yet finely etched, with a tightly structured, dry profile despite its Beerenauslese ripeness. Expect a core of stone fruit—apricot, mirabelle, and peach—balanced by vibrant, mouthwatering acidity and a pronounced slate-driven minerality. Notes of citrus oil, herbal spice, and a subtle saline edge carry into a long, focused finish. Thanks to its high extract and firm structure, this 2018 has excellent aging potential; with proper cellaring over 10–20 years, it will gain even more complexity, developing nuances of dried fruit, beeswax, and petrol while retaining its freshness.
Production
Sourced from the famed Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr vineyard in Germany’s Mosel Valley, this Riesling grows on extremely steep, south-facing slate slopes that capture maximum sunlight and reflect heat, giving the wine both ripeness and tension. The poor, rocky soils force the vines to root deeply, enhancing mineral expression and concentration. Grapes for this Beerenauslese Trocken are hand-harvested berry by berry at very high ripeness levels, ensuring only perfectly healthy, intensely flavored fruit is used. After a gentle pressing, the must is slowly fermented—typically with temperature control—to preserve aromatic precision, and is carefully vinified to dryness, an uncommon and demanding approach at this level of ripeness. The result is a deeply concentrated, terroir-driven Riesling with remarkable clarity and structure.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Riesling that pairs beautifully with refined, flavorful dishes. Try it with roasted scallops, turbot with beurre blanc, lobster, or rich shellfish pastas, as well as poultry in creamy sauces, veal, or dishes featuring morel mushrooms. It can also complement Asian cuisine with umami depth and moderate spice, such as miso-glazed cod or ginger-scented pork. Serve well-chilled but not icy, around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the aromatics to unfold. Decanting for 30–60 minutes in its youth can help the wine open and integrate, especially if you intend to enjoy it within the first few years after release.
