Description
The 2018 Promontory is one of Napa Valley’s most sought-after red wines, crafted by the Harlan family from an extraordinary, secluded hillside site on the southwestern ridge of Oakville. In this vintage, Promontory achieved a rare trifecta of perfection, earning 100-point scores from James Suckling, Antonio Galloni (Vinous) and Robert Parker. With its combination of power, precision and poise, this wine stands as a modern benchmark for what Napa Valley terroir can express at the highest level.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Promontory shows a deep, saturated ruby to almost opaque purple core, with a vibrant rim that hints at its youth and energy. The nose unfolds slowly and majestically: layers of blackcurrant and blackberry, graphite, crushed rock, cedar, tobacco leaf and subtle dark plum, wrapped in notes of violets, incense and fine baking spices from meticulous oak integration. There is a palpable sense of minerality and wildness that reflects the dramatic, rugged landscape from which it comes.
On the palate, the wine is at once powerful and incredibly precise. Ripe but perfectly balanced dark fruit is carried by a spine of vivid acidity and finely etched, ultra-refined tannins. Flavors of cassis, black cherry, mulberry and wild berries are interwoven with cocoa nib, pencil shavings, dried herbs and a distinct ferrous, stony character. The finish is long, layered and persistent, building in intensity rather than fading, with a lingering echo of dark fruit, graphite and savory complexity. While already impressive in its youth, the 2018 Promontory has outstanding aging potential; cellaring for 10–25+ years will allow its structure to soften and its aromatic complexity to deepen further.
Production
Promontory comes from a strikingly remote, amphitheater-like site tucked along the southwestern ridge of Oakville in Napa Valley—a place the Harlan family first encountered in the early 1980s and ultimately acquired in 2008. This wild terrain is defined by steep slopes, varied exposures and a powerful geologic convergence of rock types, creating extremely well-drained, low-vigor soils that naturally limit yields and intensify concentration. The vines—centered around Cabernet Sauvignon—are farmed with meticulous precision, with grapes harvested by hand in small lots at optimal ripeness to capture both power and freshness. In the cellar, each parcel is vinified separately using careful, temperature-controlled fermentation to respect the character of the site, followed by an extended, élevage-driven maturation in carefully selected barrels and large-format vessels. The aim is not overt oak influence, but a slow, patient integration of tannin, texture and aromatics that allows this singular terroir to speak with clarity.
Food & Serving
The 2018 Promontory is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored cuisine that can stand alongside its depth and structure: prime dry-aged ribeye, roast lamb with rosemary and thyme, venison, wagyu beef, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring earthy components like wild mushrooms, truffles, or root vegetables, as well as aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Parmigiano Reggiano. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting is strongly recommended—at least 2–3 hours for current drinking to allow the wine to fully unfurl, and potentially longer if opened in its youth. In peak maturity, a gentle 60–90 minute decant should be sufficient to reveal its most nuanced layers.
Producer
Promontory is the visionary project of the Harlan family, who have been shaping the modern Napa Valley landscape since the late 1970s. Following the global acclaim of Harlan Estate as a reference point for fine wine, H. William Harlan discovered the wild, hidden expanse that would become Promontory while hiking the Oakville hills decades earlier. Only in 2008 was the land finally acquired, setting the stage for a new chapter led by the second generation of the family and an elite winemaking team. From the outset, Promontory has been dedicated to exploring the unique geological convergence and extreme topography of this site, producing wines that emphasize origin, structure and longevity. Its impact has been swiftly recognized: at the BWW Competition 2021, Promontory was named both Best New Winery in the World and Best Wine Producer in the World (Cory Empting), cementing its status as one of Napa Valley’s most important and collectible estates.
