Description
The 2018 Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru "Champans" is a benchmark red Burgundy from one of Volnay’s most revered estates. Sourced from a prime, south-east facing Premier Cru slope, it captures the archetypal Volnay character: silken finesse wrapped around impressive depth and length. In this warm, generous vintage, Champans shows its trademark elegance with a touch of extra power and generosity, making it both seductive young and capable of graceful aging.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Champans typically shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue for Volnay, with a translucent core and flashes of garnet at the rim as it begins to evolve. The nose is finely etched and expressive: red and black cherries, wild strawberries and raspberries interwoven with rose petals, violets, and subtle notes of underbrush. With air, more complexity emerges—hints of warm spices, crushed limestone, and a discreet touch of fine oak.
On the palate, this is classic 1er Cru Volnay with a Champans signature: silk-textured yet structured, combining finesse and volume. Juicy red berry fruit is layered with darker plum tones, framed by refined, chalky tannins and a lively mineral line that carries the wine through a long, persistent finish. There is both succulence and tension here, with the 2018 vintage giving a touch of extra ripeness and mid-palate flesh without sacrificing precision. Already charming in its youth, it will reward patience: expect a drinking window of roughly 5–10 years from vintage for peak expression, with longer aging possible in a cool cellar.
Production
Champans is one of Volnay’s great historical terroirs, long classified among the ‘Têtes de Cuvée de Volnay’. Marquis d’Angerville owns 3.98 hectares here, in two parallel parcels that run from the top to the bottom of the slope, allowing the domaine to capture the full nuance of this remarkable Premier Cru. The upper part is poorer, stony soil resting on a limestone bench, giving tension, lift and aromatic finesse; as the slope eases towards the bottom, the soils become deeper, with more clay and stones, contributing body, power and length. Farming is fully biodynamic—a conversion begun in 2006 and completed in 2009—reflecting a philosophy of deep respect for the soil and the vine. Yields are deliberately kept low through careful pruning, strict selection of the estate’s own low-yielding “Pinot d’Angerville” plant material, and meticulous vineyard work. The soils are worked by plough, and parcels are rested under lucerne for several years before replanting. In the cellar, vinification is traditional and precise, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse and terroir transparency, followed by maturation in carefully selected French oak barrels to refine texture without overshadowing the wine’s purity.
Food & Serving
This Volnay 1er Cru is a superb partner for refined dishes where delicacy and depth are equally important. Think roast duck with cherries, guinea fowl, veal chops, or simply prepared lamb; it also shines with mushroom dishes, truffled poultry, or earthy vegetarian plates based on lentils, root vegetables and wild mushrooms. Classic Burgundian pairings such as coq au vin or a simple roast chicken with herbs are elevated by Champans’ fine tannins and fragrant fruit. Serve at 15–16°C (about 59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. In its youth, a gentle decant of 30–60 minutes helps the wine open up; as it gains bottle age, decanting should be shorter and more delicate, mainly to remove any sediment.
Producer
Domaine Marquis d’Angerville is one of the reference estates of Volnay and a historic name in Burgundy. The family has been closely tied to the village’s greatest terroirs for generations, including the iconic Clos des Ducs and several of Volnay’s finest Premiers Crus such as Champans, Taillepieds and Caillerets—climats already described and recognized as exceptional as far back as 1507 in royal records preserved in Dijon. Under successive generations, the domaine has championed low yields, meticulous vineyard work, and the selection of its own fine, naturally low-yielding Pinot Noir massal selections, known as “Pinot d’Angerville”. The move to biodynamic viticulture in the mid-2000s further cemented its reputation as a quality-driven, terroir-focused estate. Today, Marquis d’Angerville is widely regarded as a benchmark for pure, classical Volnay: wines of finesse, depth and remarkable aging potential.
