Description
The 2018 Louis Latour Montrachet Grand Cru is a rare opportunity to experience one of Burgundy’s most legendary white wines in a powerful, sun-kissed vintage. Drawn from the hallowed slopes of Montrachet, this Chardonnay unites depth, precision and almost weightless intensity in the glass. With production from this tiny Grand Cru shared between only a handful of growers, each bottle is a coveted snapshot of one of the greatest white terroirs on earth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Montrachet Grand Cru shows a bright, luminous straw-gold hue that hints at both richness and freshness. The nose is immediately intense and layered, unfolding aromas of toasted almond, marzipan, vanilla pod and subtle oak spice, intertwined with floral notes of honeysuckle and white blossom, plus a touch of ripe stone fruit and citrus oil.
On the palate, the wine is broad, concentrated and opulent, yet perfectly balanced by a precise, mineral backbone. Flavours of marzipan, vanilla cream, lemon curd and juicy white peach are wrapped in a fine, silky texture, with discreet spice and a saline edge bringing lift and definition. The finish is extraordinarily long and resonant, echoing with almond, citrus zest and floral notes. Already seductive in its youth, this Grand Cru has the structure and acidity to evolve beautifully for 10–20 years or more in a good cellar, gaining complexity, truffle, hazelnut and honeyed nuances over time.
Production
Sourced from the fabled Montrachet Grand Cru, straddling the communes of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet, this wine comes from limestone-rich, well-drained soils with a thin layer of marl that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavour. The slope’s perfect exposure maximises ripening while preserving acidity, especially crucial in a warm year like 2018. Grapes are harvested by hand in small crates to protect the fruit, with severe selection both in the vineyard and at the winery to retain only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, with a high proportion of new wood, followed by extended maturation on fine lees. Gentle bâtonnage adds texture and complexity, while careful élevage ensures that oak, fruit and minerality are seamlessly integrated into a complete, ageworthy Grand Cru.
Food & Serving
This Montrachet Grand Cru deserves to be paired with refined, richly flavoured dishes: think lobster with beurre blanc, sautéed turbot or sole with cream and morels, roasted scallops, Bresse chicken in a morel or truffle sauce, or veal sweetbreads. Aged Comté or delicate cow’s milk cheeses also work beautifully. Serve at 11–13°C to reveal its full aromatic range without blurring the structure. In its youth, decanting for 45–60 minutes helps the wine unfold its complexity; with maturity, a gentler, shorter aeration is recommended to preserve its most delicate tertiary notes.
Producer
Maison Louis Latour is one of Burgundy’s most historic and respected houses, with roots in Beaune dating back to 1797 and family experience in the region stretching even further. Over generations, the Latour family has become a reference for classic white Burgundy, particularly from Corton-Charlemagne and other top Côte de Beaune sites. As both a significant landowner and a négociant-éleveur, Louis Latour has played a key role in shaping Burgundy’s global reputation, championing meticulous vineyard work and careful, traditional vinification. Their presence in Montrachet Grand Cru underscores their standing in the region, and the domaine’s wines regularly earn high critical acclaim, cementing Louis Latour’s place among the benchmark producers of fine white Burgundy.
