Description
The 2018 Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain is a commanding, small-production mountain Cabernet from one of Napa Valley’s most sought-after cult producers. Sourced from high-elevation vineyard blocks on the rugged slopes of Spring Mountain, this wine marries power with precision, showcasing deeply concentrated fruit and a finely etched structure. Crafted entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon and raised in premium French oak, it represents the pinnacle of Napa mountain terroir with extraordinary potential for long-term cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Spring Mountain Cabernet shows a deep garnet-purple hue, almost opaque at the core, hinting at its intensity and youth. The nose is initially reserved, then gradually unfurls to reveal layers of blackcurrant, blackberry and mulberry, overlaid with earthy, stony nuances, graphite/pencil shavings, and a subtle lift of green peppercorn and crushed violet.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a tightly coiled, powerful structure. Dense black fruit is framed by a rock-solid spine of firm, grainy tannins and vibrant, mouthwatering freshness. Mineral and savory notes weave through the dark berry core, adding complexity and a sense of place. The finish is long, focused and persistent, with floral tones emerging as the wine opens in the glass. Built for longevity, this 2018 has the concentration, acidity and tannic backbone to age gracefully for 15–25 years or more under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
Spring Mountain’s steep, sun-drenched slopes in the Mayacamas range provide a classic mountain terroir: well-drained volcanic and stony soils, high elevations and cooler temperatures that slow ripening and intensify flavor. Vines here struggle for nutrients and moisture, naturally limiting yields and concentrating the fruit. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness from carefully selected parcels, then sorted meticulously to ensure only pristine berries make it into the fermenters. Vinification is focused on gentle extraction to capture power without sacrificing finesse, followed by 22 months of maturation in French oak barrels, 92% of which are new. This extensive élevage polishes the tannins, adds subtle spice and toast notes, and allows the wine’s mountain character to integrate and gain complexity before bottling.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, structured Cabernet that pairs beautifully with richly flavored, protein-driven dishes. Think grilled or pan-seared ribeye, roast lamb with rosemary, venison or other game, and dishes featuring wild mushrooms or black truffle. Aged hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or Parmigiano-Reggiano also make excellent companions. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to preserve freshness and aromatic detail. Decanting is strongly recommended in its youth—allow 2–3 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and coax out the wine’s floral and mineral nuances.
Producer
Lokoya was founded in the mid-1990s with a singular vision: to express Napa Valley’s great mountain appellations through 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wines of uncompromising quality. Working exclusively with high-elevation vineyards in AVAs such as Spring Mountain, Howell Mountain, Mount Veeder and Diamond Mountain, Lokoya has become one of Napa’s reference points for powerful, terroir-driven mountain Cabernets. Under the stewardship of winemaker Chris Carpenter and the broader Jackson Family Wines team, the estate has earned critical acclaim and a devoted following for its precise, ageworthy expressions, consistently ranking among the most collectible wines of the region.
