Description
The 2018 Leroy Puligny-Montrachet is a rare glimpse into the heart of white Burgundy at its most refined and expressive. From one of Burgundy’s most revered names, this village-level Puligny showcases the laser-like precision, textural depth and quiet power that have made Leroy wines so sought after by collectors worldwide. In the outstanding 2018 vintage, it captures the full generosity of the year while remaining impeccably poised and crystalline.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Puligny-Montrachet from Leroy shows a pale to medium lemon-gold hue with a luminous, almost silvery rim that hints at its tension and youth. Swirled in the glass, it clings with fine, elegant legs, a preview of the wine’s concentration and texture.
The nose is intensely detailed and pure: fresh lemon zest, white peach and crisp pear are framed by notes of chalk dust, crushed seashells and cool limestone. Subtle accents of acacia blossom, almond cream and fine, well-integrated oak (light toast, hazelnut and a whisper of brioche) add complexity without ever dominating the mineral core. On the palate, the wine is both silky and precise, with a refined, almost weightless concentration. Ripe citrus and orchard fruits are wrapped in a mouthwatering acidity and a strong saline, stony backbone that is quintessential Puligny. The finish is long, focused and incredibly persistent, leaving impressions of citrus oil, wet stone and delicate floral spice. While already impressive in its youth, this 2018 has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully for 10–15 years or more in a proper cellar, gaining further layers of complexity, nuttiness and honeyed depth with time.
Production
Sourced from meticulously tended parcels in the famed Puligny-Montrachet appellation, this wine is rooted in classic Côte de Beaune terroir: thin, limestone-rich soils with clay and marl over a chalky subsoil, on well-exposed slopes that naturally limit yields and accentuate minerality. Domaine Leroy farms biodynamically with an almost obsessive attention to detail—no synthetic inputs, careful canopy management and extremely low yields ensure that each vine expresses its site with maximum clarity. Harvest is done entirely by hand, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and again at the winery to keep only the most pristine Chardonnay berries. Vinification is carried out with minimal intervention: gentle pressing, native yeast fermentation and élevage in carefully chosen French oak barrels (a discreet proportion new), allowing time and fine lees contact to build texture and complexity while preserving the wine’s purity, energy and sense of place.
Food & Serving
This 2018 Leroy Puligny-Montrachet is a natural partner for refined dishes where delicate flavors and top-quality ingredients can shine. Think poached turbot or sole with beurre blanc, seared scallops, lobster or langoustines, fine sushi and sashimi, or simply prepared roast chicken with morels and cream. It also pairs beautifully with aged Comté, Beaufort and other hard alpine cheeses. For optimal enjoyment, serve lightly chilled at around 11–13°C (52–55°F); too cold and its complexity will be muted. If opened in its youth, a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes in a small, Burgundy-shaped carafe can help the wine unfurl its aromatics, though particularly older bottles should be handled carefully and may be best served directly from the bottle to preserve delicate tertiary nuances.
Producer
Domaine Leroy stands among the true legends of Burgundy, with roots tracing back to the late 19th century and the founding of Maison Leroy by François Leroy. The modern estate was shaped decisively by Lalou Bize-Leroy, who established Domaine Leroy in 1988 and quickly turned it into a global benchmark for both red and white Burgundy. A pioneer and uncompromising advocate of biodynamic viticulture, Lalou’s philosophy places absolute emphasis on vineyard health, low yields and meticulous craftsmanship, resulting in wines of remarkable intensity, finesse and longevity. Often mentioned alongside icons such as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Armand Rousseau, Leroy is renowned for producing some of the rarest and most coveted bottles in the world, with its Puligny-Montrachet exemplifying the domaine’s ability to translate great terroir into wines of profound elegance and precision.
