Description
Leroy’s 2018 Meursault Premier Cru Les Genevrières is an exceptionally rare expression of top-tier white Burgundy from one of the most revered names in the region. Sourced from the famed Premier Cru climat Les Genevrières, this Chardonnay marries the opulence of the 2018 vintage with Leroys trademark precision and energy. In a village already renowned for white wine, this cuvée stands out as a benchmark for depth, purity and age‑worthiness. Crafted in minute quantities under the obsessive eye of Lalou Bize‑Leroy, this wine captures the full richness of its limestone–marl terroir while retaining stunning tension and minerality. Domaine and Maison Leroy’s roots stretch back to the late 19th century, and over the decades the name Leroy has become synonymous with some of Burgundy’s most coveted, collectible bottles.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Meursault Premier Cru Les Genevrières shows a brilliant, luminous golden-yellow hue, with flashes of green at the rim that hint at both concentration and freshness. The nose is immediately expressive and layered: ripe yellow stone fruits such as apricot and mirabelle mingle with jasmine blossom, lemon zest, and candied citrus peel. A subtle initial reduction quickly lifts with air, revealing nuances of marzipan, toasted sesame, crushed stones and a whisper of fine, well-integrated oak.
On the palate, the wine is both powerful and supremely elegant, offering a silky, almost creamy texture that is cut by vibrant, chalky acidity. Flavors of ripe peach, baked apple and preserved lemon unfold alongside notes of almond cream, warm brioche and a distinct saline, mineral core that speaks clearly of Les Genevrières. The finish is long, precise and mouthwatering, with lingering citrus oil, subtle spice and a finely etched stony edge. Thanks to the concentration of the 2018 vintage and Leroy’s meticulous élevage, this Meursault has excellent aging potential; it is already compelling now, but will continue to gain complexity and nuance over 10–20 years in a proper cellar.
Production
Les Genevrières sits at around 260 meters above sea level in Meursault, right in the sweet spot of the Côte de Beaune’s white wine belt, on limestone and marl soils that deliver both richness and tension. Leroy’s parcels are farmed according to strict biodynamic principles, with very low yields and painstaking manual work in the vineyard to ensure perfect physiological ripeness. In 2018, an early, sun‑drenched year with little rainfall, harvest was timed precisely to preserve freshness while achieving complete maturity of the Chardonnay grapes. In the cellar, Lalou Bize‑Leroy’s approach is minimalist and uncompromising: gentle pressing, native yeast fermentations, and élevage in high‑quality oak barrels (with oak use kept refined and discreet) allow the terroir character of Les Genevrières to shine through, unmasked by excessive manipulation.
Food & Serving
This Meursault Premier Cru Les Genevrières is a natural partner for rich yet refined cuisine: think butter-poached lobster, scallops with a beurre blanc, turbot or sole in a creamy sauce, or roasted poultry with morels and cream. It also pairs beautifully with veal in a light jus, truffled dishes, and high-quality, not-too-strong cow’s milk cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort or aged Gruyère. Serve at 11–13°C to showcase both its aromatic complexity and its mineral backbone; avoid over-chilling, which can mute the nose. Decanting for 30–60 minutes in its youth helps the initial reduction blow off and allows the wine to open up fully, revealing its layered fruit, florals and deep, stony nuance.
Producer
Domaine and Maison Leroy trace their origins to the late 19th century, when François Leroy founded Maison Leroy as a négociant house, laying the groundwork for one of Burgundy’s most illustrious names. The modern Domaine Leroy was established in 1988 by his descendant Lalou Bize‑Leroy, an iconic and often uncompromising figure who has championed biodynamics and low‑yield viticulture at a time when such rigor was far from common. Situated in the heart of Burgundy, Leroy holds an enviable array of top vineyards and is mentioned in the same breath as Domaine de la Romanée‑Conti and Domaine Armand Rousseau for its extraordinary, long‑lived wines. With microscopic production, fastidious attention to detail and a track record of producing some of the most sought‑after bottles in the world, Leroy has become a global reference point for complexity, finesse and age‑worthy Burgundy.
