Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 J. Daniel Cuvée is deeply saturated ruby to opaque garnet, with a vibrant rim that hints at its youthful energy. The nose is layered and seductive, offering waves of red and black berries—think cassis, black cherry and wild blackberry—interwoven with notes of salted tobacco, sandalwood, dried violets, graphite and warm baking spices from its time in French oak. On the palate, this is full-bodied and concentrated yet almost weightless in its balance, gliding across the tongue with remarkable grace. Ripe but finely honed tannins frame a core of dark fruit, blackcurrant liqueur, plum and red cherry, supported by nuances of cocoa nib, cedar, savory spice and a subtle floral lift. There are no hard edges; instead, the wine shows seamless integration of fruit, oak and acidity, finishing very long and precise. Production
The 2018 J. Daniel Cuvée is crafted exclusively from Cabernet Sauvignon grown in some of Napa Valley’s most coveted AVAs, including Howell Mountain, Stags Leap, Oakville and Calistoga. These sites combine mountain intensity with valley-floor finesse: rocky, well-drained soils and varied elevations yield small berries, thick skins and naturally low yields, giving depth and definition to the fruit. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, sorted meticulously to ensure only pristine clusters make it to the fermenters. Vinification emphasizes precision and purity—small-lot fermentations, gentle extraction and attentive temperature control—to capture each terroir’s character. The wine is then aged in approximately 75% new French oak, where it gains additional complexity, texture and aromatic nuance without losing its vivid fruit and sense of balance.

Food & Serving
This Napa Cabernet is a natural partner for richly flavored, refined dishes: think dry-aged ribeye, herb-crusted lamb, braised short ribs, venison, or roasted game birds with wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Parmigiano-Reggiano or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to highlight its aromatics and structure. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help the wine open and soften the tannins; as it matures, a shorter decant or even a gentle splash into large Bordeaux stems will be sufficient to let its complexity unfurl.

By the early 1890s, Inglenook wines were widely regarded as among the finest in the United States, a reputation further elevated under the stewardship of Robin’s father, John Daniel Jr., whose post-Prohibition Cabernets are still celebrated as some of the world’s great red wines. Although Inglenook was sold in 1964, Robin carried forward her family’s dedication to excellence, founding Lail Vineyards to create wines that honor this storied past.
