Description

The 2018 Lail Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Blueprint is a polished, modern Napa Valley Cabernet that delivers serious depth without losing its sense of freshness. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, new leather, spice, lavender and a touch of menthol unfold in beautifully layered fashion, making this a wine that immediately impresses yet continues to reveal more with time in the glass. Within its category, Blueprint has built a reputation as one of Napa’s smartest buys, capturing the pedigree of an elite estate at a more approachable price point.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Blueprint shows an opaque, inky purple core with a vibrant ruby rim, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose is exuberant and seductive, opening with blackcurrant, blackberry compote and ripe plum, followed by notes of dark chocolate, espresso, fresh leather, baking spice, lavender and a cool graphite–menthol lift. On the palate, the wine is rich, generous and mouthfilling, yet framed by a line of bright acidity that keeps it energetic rather than heavy. Layers of dense black fruit—cassis, black cherry and boysenberry—are wrapped in fine-grained tannins and accented by hints of cocoa, cedar, crushed violets and subtle oak spice. The finish is long and persistent, with a lingering echo of dark fruit and cool minerality. While already delicious in its youth, this vintage has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 10–15 years from vintage, gaining complexity and softness over time.

Production
Sourced from prime Napa Valley terroirs, the Blueprint Cabernet reflects a blend of elevated hillside sites and well-drained benchland vineyards that naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. The region’s warm days and cool nights in 2018 allowed for a long, even growing season, giving grapes time to ripen fully while preserving acidity and aromatic detail. The Cabernet Sauvignon is hand-harvested in small lots at optimal maturity, then carefully sorted to ensure only pristine fruit makes it to the cellar. Vinification typically involves a gentle crush, a temperature-controlled fermentation to extract color and fine tannins, and an extended maceration for additional depth and texture. The wine is then aged in high-quality French oak barrels, a portion new, to add polish, structure and subtle spice without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This Napa Cabernet is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes such as grilled ribeye, roast lamb, short ribs, venison or a classic burger with aged cheddar. It also pairs beautifully with earthy mushroom dishes, truffled potato gratin, and hard cheeses like Comté, aged Gouda or Parmigiano-Reggiano. For best enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F). Decanting for 45–60 minutes in its youth will help the wine open up its aromatics and soften the tannins; as it gains bottle age, a shorter decant—primarily to remove any sediment—will be sufficient.

Producer
Lail Vineyards is the continuation of one of Napa Valley’s most storied lineages, tracing its roots back to 1879 with the founding of Inglenook Vineyards by Robin Daniel Lail’s great-granduncle, the visionary Captain Gustav Niebaum. By the 1890s, Inglenook was already considered among the finest producers in the United States, a standard that was upheld and elevated through the mid-20th century under the stewardship of Robin’s father, John Daniel Jr., whose Cabernets are still revered as benchmarks of classic Napa. After Inglenook was sold in 1964, Robin Lail carried forward her family’s legacy by establishing Lail Vineyards, dedicated to crafting Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc of exceptional elegance and brilliance. Today, Lail is recognized as a leading, heritage-driven estate in Napa Valley, uniting historical pedigree with a contemporary, terroir-focused approach that consistently wins acclaim from critics and collectors alike.
