Description
2018 Jim Barry The Armagh Shiraz is one of Australia’s true cult wines, a benchmark Clare Valley icon crafted only in outstanding vintages. Sourced from a single old-vine Shiraz vineyard planted in 1968, this is Jim Barry’s flagship and most sought‑after red. The 2018 vintage, rated 99/100 by Diende and a perfect 100/100 by Karaffel, captures the power and precision that have made The Armagh legendary among collectors and serious Shiraz lovers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Armagh Shiraz is intensely deep and opaque, with a dark purple-black core that hints at its concentration and youth. The nose is complex and aromatic, layering ripe blackberry, black plum and mulberry with notes of eucalyptus, dark chocolate, clove, baking spices and a subtle graphite-mineral edge.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, richly textured Shiraz, yet remarkably poised. Dense black fruits – blackberry, black cherry and cassis – are framed by hints of jammy sweetness on the attack, quickly balanced by a vibrant line of acidity that carries freshness through the long finish. Savoury, meaty nuances emerge with air, alongside cocoa, licorice and a gentle minty lift from the Clare Valley’s signature eucalypt influence. The tannins are fine-grained and velvety, giving structure without harshness, and the overall impression is one of power wrapped in elegance. With its concentration, balance and underlying acidity, the 2018 Armagh has outstanding aging potential; carefully cellared, it should evolve beautifully for 15–25 years or more, developing further layers of spice, leather and truffle complexity.
Production
The Armagh is sourced from a single vineyard in South Australia’s Clare Valley, planted in 1968 on a northwest-facing hillside at around 400 metres above sea level. The soils are predominantly sandy and gravelly, naturally limiting yields and producing small, intensely flavoured berries that are characteristic of this site. The 2018 growing season was almost ideal for The Armagh Vineyard: after a dry, warmer-than-average winter, much-needed rain arrived just before budburst, followed by healthy spring conditions in August and September that set the tone for an excellent season. Flowering finished before another beneficial rain event brought around 90 mm in late November and early December, perfectly preparing the vines for ripening. Warm, dry weather in January and February reduced disease pressure and encouraged the formation of loose bunches with small berries and concentrated flavours. The Shiraz was hand-harvested over seven days between 5–11 March, allowing precise selection at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, traditional vinification with careful temperature control and extended maceration is employed to extract colour, flavour and fine tannins, followed by maturation in high-quality oak (a significant portion new) to build complexity, texture and age-worthiness while preserving the vineyard’s distinct character.
Food & Serving
This is a commanding red best reserved for richly flavoured dishes. It pairs beautifully with dry-aged ribeye or wagyu steak, slow-braised lamb shanks, venison, game casseroles, or a roast beef with caramelised root vegetables and a red wine reduction. Mature hard cheeses – such as aged cheddar, Comté or Manchego – also complement its depth and structure. Serve at 16–18°C; if the wine is young, a decant of 2–3 hours helps it fully open, softening the tannins and allowing the layers of fruit, spice and eucalyptus to unfold. For older bottles, a gentle decant shortly before serving is recommended to separate the sediment while preserving the wine’s evolved aromatics.
Producer
Jim Barry Wines is a pioneering family estate in South Australia’s Clare Valley and one of the region’s most respected names. Jim Barry himself was the first qualified winemaker to establish his own winery in Clare, helping to transform the area from a modest rural district into a world-class wine region known especially for Riesling and Shiraz. Over several generations, the Barry family has expanded and refined their vineyard holdings, with a strong focus on site expression and careful viticulture. The Armagh vineyard, planted in 1968, quickly emerged as one of their finest assets and is now considered one of Australia’s great Shiraz sites. Today, Jim Barry Wines holds an important place in the history and reputation of Clare Valley, with numerous national and international accolades to its name, and The Armagh stands at the pinnacle of their portfolio as a flagship that consistently garners top critical scores and collector demand.
