Description

The 2018 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Blanc is a benchmark white Burgundy from one of the region’s most respected domaines. Sourced from the famed Premier Cru Morgeot climat, this wine marries power with precision, offering a generous, structured expression of Chardonnay that remains impeccably balanced. 2018 was a warm, ripe vintage in Burgundy, and this bottling captures that richness while preserving the tension and minerality that have made Ramonet a reference point for Chassagne-Montrachet lovers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a vibrant, medium-golden hue with youthful brightness at the rim. The nose opens with layers of ripe stone fruit—peach, apricot, and yellow plum—lifted by notes of Meyer lemon, white flowers, and fresh butter, all underpinned by a subtle smoky, flinty minerality and a hint of toasted hazelnut from well-judged oak. On the palate, this Morgeot is broad, textural, and concentrated, offering generous flavors of ripe pear, baked apple, and lemon curd, carried by a precise line of acidity. The mid-palate is creamy yet energetic, with savory undertones of grilled almonds, brioche, and wet stone that give the wine depth and complexity. The finish is long and saline, tightening slightly with a gentle phenolic grip that speaks to the Premier Cru pedigree. While already approachable, this 2018 has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary notes of honey, nuts, and dried flowers.

Production
This wine comes from the Premier Cru Morgeot vineyard in Chassagne-Montrachet, an area known for its heavier clay-limestone soils that naturally produce more powerful, structured whites. The Ramonet family farms these parcels with careful attention to vine health and low yields, ensuring concentration without sacrificing freshness. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict sorting to retain only the healthiest bunches. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels, with a thoughtful use of new oak to enhance texture rather than dominate the character of the fruit. The wine then matures on its fine lees, allowing it to build complexity, creaminess, and integration before bottling, resulting in a white Burgundy that is both expressive in its youth and capable of aging gracefully.

Food & Serving
The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Blanc is a superb partner for rich seafood dishes such as butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, or roasted turbot with beurre blanc. It also pairs beautifully with roasted chicken, veal in cream sauce, truffled risotto, and fine soft cheeses like Saint-Marcellin or Brillat-Savarin. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight both its freshness and its layered texture. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes in a medium-sized white wine carafe can help the aromatics open up, especially in its younger years, revealing additional complexity and nuance.

Producer
Domaine Ramonet, led by Jean-Claude and the Ramonet family, is one of the most revered names in Burgundy, particularly renowned for its white wines from Chassagne-Montrachet and surrounding appellations. Founded in the early 20th century, the domaine has built a reputation on meticulous vineyard work, restrained yields, and a classic, terroir-driven style that has made their wines highly sought after by collectors worldwide. Their holdings include some of the most prestigious climats in the Côte de Beaune, and they are especially celebrated for producing whites that combine intensity, minerality, and remarkable aging potential. Over the decades, Ramonet has become synonymous with authenticity and finesse in Chassagne-Montrachet, consistently crafting wines that rank among the finest expressions of Burgundy Chardonnay.
