Description

2018 Giodo La Quinta Toscane is a refined, terroir-driven Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most exciting modern producers. Crafted from a single, small vineyard, it offers all the charm of top Tuscan red with a slightly more approachable profile than classic Brunello. Elegantly framed and beautifully balanced, this is a wine that showcases purity of fruit over heavy oak, and it has already been recognised with 94/100 by Diende.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Quinta shows a luminous, medium ruby-red colour with youthful brightness at the rim. The nose is expressive and inviting, with lifted aromas of fresh red cherries, wild strawberries and cranberries intertwined with notes of cocoa, milk chocolate, roasted hazelnut, and a subtle hint of dried herbs and violets. On the palate, the wine is vibrant and precise, offering crisp red-berry fruit that feels juicy yet finely structured. Flavours of sour cherry, red currant and pomegranate are layered with nuances of chocolate, toasted nuts and a delicate spice from the large oak casks. The tannins are high-polished and silky, giving structure without heaviness, while the acidity is refreshing and mouth-watering, driving a long, graceful finish. Delicious and open-knit now, it has the concentration and balance to age comfortably for another 8–10 years, gaining complexity while retaining its freshness.

Production
La Quinta comes from Giodo’s fifth-planted Sangiovese vineyard, a tiny 3.5-hectare parcel situated at around 300 metres above sea level, facing southeast in the hills of Montalcino. The soils are predominantly poor clay studded with small stones, naturally limiting yields and contributing to the wine’s concentration and mineral backbone. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and aromatic precision. In the cellar, Sangiovese is vinified with a focus on elegance and purity of fruit, followed by 12 months of maturation in large 500- and 1200-litre oak casks. These larger vessels impart gentle oxygenation and a subtle frame of spice, without overshadowing the delicate red-fruit character that defines La Quinta.

Food & Serving
This Tuscan red is a versatile food companion, pairing beautifully with classic Italian dishes such as tomato-based pasta, pappardelle with ragù, margherita or mushroom pizza, and grilled lamb chops or pork tenderloin. It also works wonderfully with roasted poultry, veal, charcuterie, and aged hard cheeses like Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its freshness and aromatic lift. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended in its youth to let the wine open up, while older bottles can be served directly after gentle aeration in the glass.

Producer
Giodo is the personal project of renowned oenologist Carlo Ferrini, one of the most respected consulting winemakers in Italy, whose work has shaped many of Tuscany’s finest estates. With Giodo, Ferrini set out to create benchmark expressions of Sangiovese from carefully chosen vineyards in the Brunello di Montalcino area, uniting deep regional roots with a precise, modern touch. The estate’s small scale allows meticulous attention to every vine and every barrel, resulting in wines that are consistently praised for their elegance, balance and purity. Giodo has quickly become a reference point in Montalcino, with both its Brunello and La Quinta bottlings earning critical acclaim and cementing the winery’s reputation among serious collectors and enthusiasts alike.
