Description
The 2018 Giodo Brunello di Montalcino is a strikingly beautiful expression of Sangiovese, crafted with rare precision and elegance in one of Italy’s most revered appellations. This is Giodo’s flagship Brunello, celebrated for its extraordinary purity of fruit and finesse, and for the way it seems to expand and deepen with every minute in the glass. Hailing from carefully chosen parcels in Montalcino, it represents both modern craftsmanship and deep respect for the historic Brunello tradition.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Giodo Brunello di Montalcino shows a luminous, medium-deep ruby hue with garnet reflections beginning to form at the rim, hinting at its evolution and longevity. The nose is wonderfully refined and lifted, opening with vibrant red cherry and wild berries, followed by violet and rose petals, subtle notes of camphor and dried herbs, and a fine lattice of sweet baking spices.
On the palate, this Brunello is all about grace wrapped in quiet power. Silky, ultra-fine tannins feel almost invisible at first, yet they are extensive and perfectly integrated, giving the wine impressive structure and length. Layers of sour cherry, red plum, and wild strawberry unfold alongside hints of blood orange, forest floor, and gentle spice. As it takes in air, the wine gains volume and depth, moving from a compact core to a more expansive, hovering presence in the mouth. The finish is long and composed, closing with a pure, sweet cherry echo and a touch of mineral precision. The 2018 vintage has a long life ahead of it; while already captivating, it will reward patience and careful cellaring for 10–20+ years, developing greater complexity and tertiary nuances over time.
Production
Giodo’s Brunello di Montalcino is born from six hectares of meticulously tended vineyards situated between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Sant’Antimo, an area blessed with ideal altitude, exposure, and a mosaic of well-draining soils. The terroir combines the warmth of Montalcino’s rolling hills with cooling breezes and the moderating influence of nearby Monte Amiata, allowing the Sangiovese (Brunello) grapes to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and aromatic clarity. Grapes are harvested by hand, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and again in the cellar to ensure only perfectly healthy, optimally ripe clusters are used. Vinification focuses on expressing the purity of Sangiovese: gentle extraction, controlled fermentations, and careful élevage in thoughtfully chosen large oak vessels help to shape a wine that is both texturally polished and profoundly authentic to its origin. The result is a Brunello that marries depth and structure with remarkable finesse.
Food & Serving
This refined Brunello is a natural partner for classic Tuscan and hearty Italian cuisine. Pair it with bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised lamb shank, wild boar ragù, or roast duck, as well as aged pecorino and truffled mushroom dishes that highlight its earthy, savory undertones. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and fine structure. Decanting is recommended, especially in its youth: give it 1–2 hours in a decanter to allow the wine’s initially compact core to open, gaining volume, perfume, and texture in the glass.
Producer
Giodo was founded by Carlo Ferrini, one of Italy’s most acclaimed oenologists, as the realization of his personal vision in the historic terroir of Montalcino. The name Giodo is a heartfelt tribute to his parents, Giovanna and Donatello, and encapsulates a philosophy built on meticulous attention to every detail in the vineyard and cellar. Ferrini began the Giodo story in 2002, after years of studying Montalcino’s landscapes, when he identified and acquired his first hectare in the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino appellation. Today, Giodo’s six hectares of vines enjoy a spectacular setting, framed by cypress-lined approaches and sweeping views over Montalcino’s undulating hills towards Monte Amiata. Despite its relatively small scale, Giodo has quickly become one of the most talked-about producers in the region, admired for crafting Brunellos that combine precision, elegance, and ageworthy depth, and for helping to define a modern, terroir-driven interpretation of this iconic Tuscan wine.
