Description

From one of Alto Piemonte’s most revered crus, the 2018 Giacomo Conterno Nervi Gattinara Vigna Molsino Magnum showcases Nebbiolo in its most powerful, yet finely sculpted form. Planted in 1992 on a commanding, sheltered hillside at around 400 meters above Gattinara, the Molsino vineyard is famed for delivering extra fruit weight, concentration, and depth. Under the stewardship of Barolo legend Roberto Conterno, this single-vineyard Gattinara has quickly become a benchmark for the region, marrying historic terroir with meticulous, modern precision.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Vigna Molsino shows a deep, luminous garnet core with the classic translucent rim that signals serious Nebbiolo built for aging. The aromas are intensely layered: dark cherry and ripe plum interwoven with notes of sage, menthol, fresh leather, licorice, and dark spices. With air, hints of dried rose petals, iron, and crushed stone emerge, adding a distinct mineral and savory complexity. On the palate, Molsino is both commanding and refined—this is a wine with “broad shoulders” and palpable grip, yet it remains poised and finely balanced. Concentrated dark-red and black fruits are supported by firm, chalky tannins and vibrant, mouthwatering acidity that drives the wine across the palate. The finish is long, deep, and beautifully persistent, unfolding with spice, tobacco, and a lingering, saline minerality. In magnum, this 2018 has excellent aging potential: it will reward patience over 15–25 years, gaining even greater aromatic complexity and textural harmony with time.

Production
Vigna Molsino sits on steep, south- and southwest-facing slopes above Gattinara at roughly 400 meters altitude, where the vines dig into poor, rocky, volcanic and alluvial soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The altitude and exposure provide excellent diurnal shifts, preserving acidity and aromatic lift in the Nebbiolo grapes. Harvest is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly ripe and healthy fruit is brought to the cellar. Under Roberto Conterno’s guidance, the vinification follows a traditional, minimalist philosophy: gentle crushing, long macerations to extract fine tannins and terroir expression, and fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks, followed by extended aging in large neutral botti. This approach allows the character of Molsino’s exceptional site to shine clearly through the wine.

Food & Serving
This powerful yet elegant Gattinara is a superb match for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef short ribs, ossobuco, roasted lamb, game birds, or slow-cooked ragù over fresh egg pasta. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, old Comté, or mature pecorino, as well as truffle dishes and mushroom-based cuisine. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) and, given the structure and youth of the 2018, decanting is strongly recommended—at least 1–2 hours for near-term enjoyment, and longer if opened in the next few years. In magnum format, the wine will evolve more slowly, making it ideal for festive meals and extended cellaring.

Producer
Nervi, founded by Italo Nervi in 1906 with family vineyards dating back to 1679, is the oldest and one of the most esteemed estates in Gattinara, in Alto Piemonte. Long regarded as a reference point for classic, age-worthy Nebbiolo from the northern reaches of Piedmont, Nervi’s reputation entered a new chapter in 2018 when Roberto Conterno of the legendary Barolo estate Giacomo Conterno acquired a majority stake, with previous owners Kathrine and Erling Astrup remaining as partners. This partnership united one of Barolo’s most exacting winemakers with Gattinara’s most historic vineyard holdings, elevating the profile of the region worldwide. Today, under the Giacomo Conterno – Nervi banner, the estate produces some of the most sought-after Nebbiolo wines in Alto Piemonte, with Vigna Molsino standing out as one of its flagship crus.
