Description

The 2018 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Arione is a profound expression of Serralunga d’Alba, crafted by one of Barolo’s most revered traditionalists. Sourced from the Arione cru just south of Francia, this wine offers a darker, more brooding profile that complements the estate’s other single-vineyard bottlings. In 2018, Conterno has shaped a Barolo that combines intensity and structure with surprising finesse and drinkability in its youth, while still promising decades of evolution.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Arione shows a deep garnet core with brick-tinged edges, classic for Nebbiolo yet notably dense and vibrant. The nose opens slowly but insistently with dark cherry, macerated raspberry, and blackcurrant, followed by layers of rose petals, dried violets, blood orange zest, licorice, and iron-tinged minerality. Subtle notes of tobacco leaf, tar, and sweet spices from long, gentle aging in large casks weave into the background. On the palate, Arione skews toward the more powerful, savory side of Barolo: firm, finely etched tannins frame flavors of black cherry, plum skin, pomegranate, and wild strawberry, underpinned by graphite, crushed rock, and hints of balsamic and underbrush. The acidity is vibrant and mouthwatering, giving lift and precision to the wine’s considerable depth. The finish is long, dry, and layered, with lingering notes of rose, citrus peel, and spice. While already showing impressive harmony, this 2018 has the structure to age gracefully for 15–25 years or more, gaining complexity and silkier texture with time in the cellar.

Production
Arione is a single cru in Serralunga d’Alba, known for its compact, limestone-rich marls and clay that yield Barolo of notable depth, tension, and mineral grip. The vineyard’s elevation and exposure ensure excellent ripening while preserving Nebbiolo’s hallmark acidity and aromatic complexity. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine clusters are used. Fermentation typically takes place in stainless steel or wooden vats with long macerations on the skins, allowing for deep extraction of color, tannin, and aroma. The wine is then aged for an extended period in large, neutral Slavonian oak botti, a hallmark of the Conterno style, which preserves purity of fruit and terroir while slowly polishing the formidable structure.

Food & Serving
This Barolo calls for equally characterful dishes: think braised veal shank (osso buco), Barolo-braised short ribs, roasted lamb with rosemary and garlic, or game such as venison or wild boar. Classic Piedmontese pairings like tajarin with white truffles, brasato al Barolo, or aged hard cheeses (Parmigiano Reggiano, aged Comté, or mature Pecorino) work beautifully with Arione’s tannic frame and complex aromatics. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo stems to allow the bouquet to fully unfurl. Decanting is strongly recommended: 2–3 hours for current drinking to soften the tannins and awaken the aromatics, and potentially longer if opened at a younger stage of its aging curve.

Producer
Giacomo Conterno is one of the most legendary names in Barolo, synonymous with traditional winemaking and uncompromising quality. Founded in the early 20th century, the estate gained global recognition through its iconic Monfortino, a benchmark for ageworthy, classically styled Barolo. Under the leadership of the late Roberto Conterno and now his son, the winery has expanded its holdings to include top crus such as Francia and Arione, cementing its status as a reference point for Serralunga terroir. Known for long macerations, aging in large Slavonian oak botti, and a rigorous approach to vineyard management and selection, Giacomo Conterno has played a pivotal role in preserving and elevating the traditional Barolo style, consistently producing wines that are among the most sought-after in the region and beyond.
