Description

The 2018 Forman Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a benchmark example of classically styled Napa, crafted by the steady hand of one man, Ric Forman, from vine to bottle. Sourced from estate vineyards on a ridgeline at the base of Howell Mountain overlooking St. Helena, it marries Napa’s natural power with a distinctly old-world sensibility. With its Bordeaux-inspired blend and meticulous élevage, this is a Cabernet that speaks to elegance, depth, and longevity rather than sheer force.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Forman Cabernet shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, suggesting both concentration and youthful energy. As it opens, layers of aroma unwind gradually: notes of ripe blackcurrant, black cherry, and dark berry compote are interwoven with tobacco leaf, graphite, dried violets, and a subtle hint of cedar and vanilla from fine French oak. A gentle smokiness and touch of baking spice play in the background, adding further dimension without overwhelming the fruit. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably poised, with a core of pure cassis, blackberry, and plum framed by savory nuances of cigar box, cocoa, and a whisper of dried herbs. The tannins are ultra-fine, ripe, and textural—silky at first, then gradually tightening through the mid-palate to provide structure. A lively acidity keeps everything fresh and lifted, leading to a long, graceful finish with echoes of dark fruit, tobacco, and polished oak. Already compelling with some air, this 2018 has excellent aging potential; expect it to evolve beautifully over 10–15 years or more, gaining further complexity, softness, and tertiary notes of leather, truffle, and forest floor.

Production
Forman Vineyard sits on a rocky ridgeline at the foot of Howell Mountain above St. Helena, benefiting from well-drained hillside soils, cooling evening breezes, and ample sun exposure—conditions that naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. The estate is divided into four parcels planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, all farmed with a focus on gentle, hands-on care. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and handled with great delicacy from picking through to fermentation. For the 2018 Cabernet, the final blend is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot—very much a Bordeaux-style assemblage. Fermentation takes place in small stainless-steel tanks to allow precise lot-by-lot management, followed by 22 months of maturation in Bordeaux barriques, 75% of which are new and 25% two-year-old French oak. The wines rest in deep, cool caves carved into the hillside, literally aging in the earth from which the grapes are grown, contributing to a slow, even evolution and the wine’s refined texture.

Food & Serving
This refined Napa Cabernet, with its layered fruit and tobacco-driven complexity, pairs beautifully with classic, richly flavored dishes. Think grilled or roasted beef (ribeye, strip steak, or prime rib), lamb chops with rosemary and garlic, or slow-braised short ribs. It also shines alongside game such as venison, and can complement mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Cheddar. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–65°F) to highlight both fruit and structure. Young bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours of decanting to allow the wine to fully open its aromatic layers; older bottles, once matured, may need a shorter, gentler decant primarily to remove any sediment.

Producer
Forman Vineyard was founded in 1983 by Ric Forman, one of Napa Valley’s most respected winemakers, after a three-year search for the ideal site. In 1978 he acquired the current estate on a Howell Mountain ridgeline overlooking St. Helena, recognizing its potential to produce classically styled, ageworthy wines. From the outset, Forman has favored a traditional, European-influenced approach, placing finesse, balance, and terroir expression ahead of sheer power. Over the decades, his small production of Chardonnay and Bordeaux-variety reds has earned a reputation among collectors and sommeliers for their elegance, consistency, and ability to age gracefully. Today, Forman Vineyard stands as a quiet but important reference point in Napa—a producer whose wines bridge the best of old-world sensibility with the distinctive character of California’s premier Cabernet terroir.
