Description
The 2018 Fattoria le Pupille Saffredi Jeroboam is the showpiece wine of this acclaimed Maremma estate, presented here in an impressive 3-liter double magnum. A benchmark Super Tuscan, Saffredi comes from a tiny 5-hectare hillside vineyard at 250 meters above sea level and has long been considered one of Tuscany’s most refined and powerful reds. The 2018 vintage has been hailed by leading critics, with Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate awarding 96 points, James Suckling 97 points, and Antonio Galloni (Vinous, 97+/100) calling it “quite possibly the most refined Saffredi I have ever tasted.”
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Saffredi is deep, opaque ruby with a youthful, almost inky core and a vibrant garnet rim that hints at its concentration and aging potential. The nose opens with ripe black fruits—blackberry, blackcurrant, and dark plum—layered with notes of wild herbs, dried flowers, and Mediterranean scrub. Underneath, there is a seductive interplay of vanilla, sweet spice, and fine cedar from its élevage in French oak, along with hints of cocoa, licorice, and graphite.
On the palate, this is a structured, complex and multi-layered wine. Dense black fruit—blackberry jam, black cherry and cassis—is framed by firm yet polished tannins and a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine lifted and fresh. Nuances of cinnamon, vanilla pod, coffee bean, tobacco leaf and a touch of smoky spice unfold with air, evolving into savory notes of cedar, dark chocolate and a faint balsamic edge. The finish is long, persistent and finely etched, with a refined, almost silky precision that marks the 2018 as particularly elegant within the Saffredi lineage. This is built for the long haul: while already impressive in its youth, it will reward 10–20+ years of cellaring, gaining even more harmony and complexity over time, especially in this larger 3-liter format.
Production
Saffredi is sourced from a single, small 5-hectare vineyard in the hills of the Maremma in southern Tuscany, sitting around 250 meters above sea level. The site benefits from warm, sun-drenched days moderated by cooling coastal breezes, and poor, well-drained soils that naturally limit yields and intensify concentration in the grapes. The fruit is harvested by hand, allowing meticulous selection of only perfectly ripe bunches. In the cellar, the wine is vinified with great care to preserve both power and finesse, followed by 18 months of maturation in French oak barriques, approximately 75% of which are new. This significant proportion of new oak contributes to Saffredi’s structure, fine-grained tannins, and layered complexity, while the extended aging integrates the wood beautifully into the dense, dark fruit core.
Food & Serving
This 2018 Saffredi is a natural partner for richly flavored, protein-driven dishes. Think grilled or roasted lamb with rosemary, bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef short ribs, venison or other game, and deeply flavored ragùs over pappardelle or polenta. Mature hard cheeses such as aged Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano Reggiano also work beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight the wine’s aromatics and balance. Given both the structure of the 2018 vintage and the large-format Jeroboam, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended in its youth to allow the wine to unfurl its layers; older bottles, in future years, may need slightly less time but will still benefit from a gentle decant to remove sediment and open the bouquet.
