Description
The 2018 Elvio Cogno Barolo Cascina Nuova is a finely chiseled expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barolo’s most respected, traditionally minded estates. Sourced from the estate’s own vineyards around the historic Cascina Nuova in Novello, it offers an unusually accessible and refined take on this iconic appellation. This cuvée balances classic Barolo structure with an inviting freshness, making it a compelling choice both for seasoned collectors and those discovering Barolo for the first time.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Cascina Nuova shows a luminous garnet core with brick-tinged reflections at the rim, typical of Nebbiolo even in its youth. The nose is detailed and pure, with vibrant notes of red and black currants, cassis, and wild berries intertwined with grilled herbs, crushed stone, and a subtle floral lift reminiscent of rose and violet. Underneath, hints of licorice, gentle spice, and a touch of earth add depth without weighing the wine down.
On the palate, this Barolo is elegant and poised rather than brooding, with a medium to full body and a linear, precise structure. The tannins, while very much present as befits a young Nebbiolo, are already finely knit and silk-edged, giving a polished texture that supports the bright red fruit and mineral core. Fresh acidity keeps everything lively and extends the finish, which lingers with notes of currant, herbs, and stone. While approachable now with some air, this 2018 has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances over time.
Production
Perched atop Bricco Ravera near the village of Novello in the Langhe, Elvio Cogno’s vineyards benefit from a classic Barolo terroir: calcareous-clay marl, well-drained slopes, and a cool yet sunny microclimate that favors Nebbiolo’s slow, even ripening. The estate works primarily with native varieties, with careful attention to each parcel’s exposure and soil. Grapes for Cascina Nuova are hand-harvested to ensure optimal ripeness and rigorous selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, vinification follows a traditional approach, with extended maceration on the skins to extract aroma, color, and fine-grained tannins, followed by aging in predominantly large Slavonian oak botti. This combination preserves Nebbiolo’s aromatic precision and the mineral identity of Novello, while allowing the tannins to refine and integrate over time.
Food & Serving
This Barolo pairs beautifully with richly flavored yet refined dishes such as braised veal shank, ossobuco, roast lamb, or slow-cooked beef with root vegetables. It also shines alongside game birds, truffle-infused pastas, mushroom risotto, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; as the wine matures, a shorter decant will generally suffice, primarily to remove any sediment.
Producer
Elvio Cogno is a historic family estate rooted in the Langhe, located in an 18th-century manor on the crest of Bricco Ravera in Novello, one of the eleven communes authorized to produce Barolo. The Cogno family has been making wine in the region for four generations, with founder Elvio passing on a deep respect for traditional Barolo to his daughter Nadia and her husband, winemaker Valter Fissore. Today, their daughter Elena guides the estate’s hallmark style toward an ever more refined and graceful expression, while remaining firmly committed to indigenous varieties such as Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, and Nascetta. Elvio Cogno is widely regarded as a benchmark producer in Novello, known for precision, elegance, and wines that faithfully express the unique character of their hillside terroir.
