Description
The 2018 Domaine Perrot-Minot Nuits-Saint-Georges La Richemone Cuvée Ultra Vignes Centenaires is a profoundly expressive Pinot Noir from one of the Côte de Nuits’ most meticulous artisans. Crafted from exceptionally old vines in the esteemed Premier Cru La Richemone, this cuvée captures the power and depth of Nuits-Saint-Georges while remaining supremely refined. In the standout 2018 vintage, it marries concentration, freshness and silken texture in a way that defines modern high-end Burgundy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue with garnet highlights, signaling both its intensity and early evolution. The nose is pure and complex, opening with ripe black cherry, wild raspberry and blackberry, layered with violet, rose petal, and a fine thread of sweet spice. With air, notes of forest floor, crushed stone, licorice, cocoa and subtle vanilla from carefully judged oak emerge, all in beautifully woven harmony.
On the palate, the wine is full and enveloping yet impeccably balanced, with a silken, almost creamy texture framed by ultra-fine, velvety tannins. Flavors of dark cherry, blackcurrant and wild strawberry are interlaced with Asian spice, black tea, undergrowth and mineral-driven salinity. The 2018 vintage brings impressive concentration and ripe fruit, but the wine retains a striking line of freshness that carries through a long, resonant finish. Already seductive in youth, this cuvée has the structure and energy to age gracefully for 15–20+ years, gradually revealing even greater nuance and tertiary complexity.
Production
La Richemone lies in the southern sector of Nuits-Saint-Georges, on a rare and privileged terroir where deep, well-draining gravel allows the centenarian vines to root profoundly, while clay-limestone soils confer both power and finesse. The vines for this ‘Cuvée Ultra Vignes Centenaires’ are extremely old—often over 100 years—naturally yielding very small crops of highly concentrated berries. In 2018, after a wet winter and early spring that replenished water reserves, the vines weathered an unusually warm, dry summer, bringing grapes to perfect physiological ripeness in pristine health. The fruit is harvested entirely by hand, with fastidious sorting to retain only flawless clusters. In the cellar, Christophe Perrot-Minot applies a philosophy of minimal intervention: gentle handling, precise extraction, and a carefully balanced use of new oak so as not to overshadow the fruit or terroir. Fermentation emphasizes purity and delicacy of tannin, and élevage in fine-grained barrels polishes the wine’s texture while preserving its remarkable freshness and aromatic clarity.
Food & Serving
This Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru is an exceptional partner for refined, savory dishes such as roast duck breast with cherries, pigeon or squab, veal sweetbreads, or a classic beef tenderloin with wild mushrooms and a red wine jus. It also shines with game birds, truffled poultry, and richer dishes built around porcini, morels or other earthy mushrooms; aged hard cheeses like Comté or Gruyère further highlight its complexity. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to preserve its aromatic detail and tension. For bottles opened in the next 5–10 years, decanting for 60–90 minutes is recommended to unfurl the nose and soften the structure; older bottles will benefit from a gentler, shorter decant primarily to remove sediment.
Producer
Domaine Perrot-Minot, rooted in Burgundy since the first half of the 19th century, is a benchmark estate of the Côte de Nuits and has remained in the same family for five generations. Since taking over in 1993, Christophe Perrot-Minot has transformed the domaine into one of the region’s most sought-after producers, with about 12 hectares of vineyards in prestigious villages including Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis and Vosne-Romanée. His work with very old vines—often more than 50 years of age, and in this case centenarian—low yields, and a largely biodynamic, low-intervention approach has elevated the estate’s reputation for purity, finesse and terroir transparency. The ‘Ultra’ cuvées, including La Richemone Cuvée Ultra Vignes Centenaires, are among the domaine’s most coveted wines, encapsulating the depth, elegance and precision that have made Perrot-Minot a reference point in contemporary Burgundy.
