Description

The 2018 Domaine Perrot-Minot Morey-Saint-Denis “En La Rue de Vergy” is a precise, high-toned expression of Pinot Noir from one of the most sought-after terroirs sitting just above the grands crus of Morey. This cuvée marries crystalline fruit with mineral-driven finesse, showcasing the purity and tension that have made Perrot-Minot a reference point in the Côte de Nuits. In a generous, ripe vintage like 2018, “En La Rue de Vergy” offers both immediate charm and underlying structure, making it a standout village-level wine with clear premier cru ambitions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 “En La Rue de Vergy” shows a bright, translucent ruby hue with a youthful rim, hinting at its energy and lift. The nose is expressive yet refined, offering aromas of wild red cherries, crushed raspberries, and pomegranate, layered with rose petals, peony, and a fine thread of chalky minerality. Subtle notes of fresh herbs, tea leaf, and a touch of spice add complexity without weighing the wine down. On the palate, this is finely etched and vibrant, with juicy red berry fruit framed by a taut, saline backbone that speaks clearly of its high-altitude, limestone-rich site. The tannins are ultra-fine and silky, giving the wine a graceful texture, while a lively acidity carries flavors of red currant, cranberry, and cherry skin through a long, mouthwatering finish. Despite the ripeness of the 2018 vintage, the wine retains precision and freshness rather than opulence. It can be enjoyed now for its aromatic charm and supple texture, but it has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining more savory, earthy nuances with time in the cellar.

Production
“En La Rue de Vergy” comes from a high-lying parcel in Morey-Saint-Denis that sits just above some of the village’s most famous grands crus, on thin, stony soils rich in limestone over a harder rock subsoil. This cooler, breezy microclimate naturally favors finesse, tension, and aromatic lift over sheer power. At Domaine Perrot-Minot, the vineyards are worked with a strong emphasis on biodynamic principles, low yields, and meticulous canopy management to ensure optimal ripeness and balance. The Pinot Noir grapes are harvested by hand in small crates, sorted rigorously in the vineyard and again at the winery to retain only pristine fruit. Vinification follows Christophe Perrot-Minot’s philosophy of minimal intervention: gentle extraction, careful temperature control, and a thoughtful proportion of whole berries and destemmed fruit to emphasize purity and terroir transparency. Aging typically takes place in carefully selected French oak barrels, with new oak used sparingly so that the fine, mineral-driven character of the site remains at the forefront.

Food & Serving
This Morey-Saint-Denis is a natural partner for refined, subtly flavored dishes that echo its elegance and complexity. Think roasted duck breast with cherries, herb-crusted veal, coquelet or guinea fowl, mushroom risotto, or delicate game birds. It also pairs beautifully with charcuterie, soft to semi-hard cheeses such as Comté, Tomme, or Reblochon, and dishes featuring earthy mushrooms or truffle. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its aromatic lift and textural finesse. Younger bottles benefit from a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes to allow the wine to unfurl its floral and mineral nuances, while more mature bottles should be handled delicately and, if decanted, only briefly to preserve their developed bouquet.

Producer
Domaine Perrot-Minot is a historic Burgundy estate based in the Côte de Nuits, with roots reaching back to the first half of the 19th century and five generations of family stewardship. Today, Christophe Perrot-Minot, who took over in 1993, has elevated the domaine into the top echelon of the region through an unwavering focus on old vines, low yields, and an almost obsessive attention to detail in both vineyard and cellar. With around 12 hectares of holdings across prestigious villages such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis, and Vosne-Romanée, the domaine is particularly renowned for its very old parcels—often 50 years and older—which lend depth and concentration to the wines. Christophe’s minimalist, terroir-first approach, sensitive use of oak, and adoption of biodynamic-inspired practices have earned Perrot-Minot a reputation for producing some of the purest, most nuanced expressions of Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir, with cuvées like “En La Rue de Vergy” showcasing the finesse and clarity that define the estate’s style.
