Description

The 2018 Domaine Perrot-Minot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a striking expression of Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir from one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most seductive Grand Crus. In the generous, sun-filled 2018 vintage, Christophe Perrot-Minot has crafted a wine that marries depth and concentration with remarkable freshness and finesse. This is a serious, cellar‑worthy Burgundy that still offers immediate charm in the glass.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru shows a deep, luminous ruby hue with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at both richness and precision. The nose is beautifully perfumed and layered: ripe red and black cherries, wild strawberries and raspberries mingle with notes of rose petals, violets, sweet spices, fine tea leaf, forest floor and a touch of subtle, well-integrated oak. On the palate, the wine is silken yet powerful, with a refined, velvety tannin structure that is a hallmark of Charmes. Ripe cherry and plum fruit are framed by lifted acidity, giving energy and definition to the generous mid-palate. Nuances of licorice, cocoa, spice and crushed stone unfold with air, leading into a long, precise, mineral-tinged finish. Thanks to the concentration and balance of the 2018 vintage, this Grand Cru has excellent aging potential; it will drink beautifully from around 2026 but has the structure to evolve gracefully for 15–20 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
Charmes-Chambertin is situated on the gentle, well-exposed slopes of Gevrey-Chambertin in the Côte de Nuits, where thin, stony topsoils over clay-limestone and marl give naturally low yields and impressive depth. Domaine Perrot-Minot works these old vines with a strong commitment to sustainable, largely biodynamic principles, emphasizing meticulous vineyard care, low yields and optimal ripeness. In 2018, the vines benefited from substantial winter and early spring rainfall, building water reserves that allowed them to withstand a hot, dry summer and achieve perfect physiological maturity. The Pinot Noir grapes are harvested entirely by hand, sorted rigorously, and vinified with minimal intervention to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression. Fermentations are conducted with careful temperature control, extraction is gentle, and new oak is used judiciously so that the wood frames rather than dominates the wine.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru is a superb partner for refined dishes such as roast duck with cherries, pigeon, veal sweetbreads, lamb saddle, or an elegant beef tenderloin with truffle jus. It also shines alongside game birds and earthy preparations featuring morels, porcini or black truffle, as well as aged Burgundian or Alpine cheeses. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) in generous Burgundy stemware. Decanting 1–2 hours before serving in its youth will help the wine unfurl its aromatic complexity; older bottles should be handled gently and decanted only briefly, if at all, to preserve their most delicate nuances.

Producer
Domaine Perrot-Minot, based in the heart of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, traces its roots back to the first half of the 19th century and has remained in the same family for five generations. Since taking over in 1993, Christophe Perrot-Minot has transformed the estate into one of the reference addresses of the region, with a focus on old vines, meticulous vineyard work and a philosophy of minimal intervention in the cellar. The domaine farms around 12 hectares across some of Burgundy’s most coveted villages, including Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis and Vosne-Romanée, and is particularly renowned for the concentration and precision delivered by its very old Pinot Noir vines, often over 50 years of age. Through careful, biodynamic-leaning practices and a restrained approach to new oak, Perrot-Minot has earned a reputation for producing wines of great purity, elegance and terroir transparency, consistently praised by critics and collectors worldwide.
