Description
The 2018 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon in magnum format is a benchmark white Burgundy from one of the region’s most revered estates. Sourced from the historic Clavoillon premier cru, this Chardonnay marries precision, depth and minerality in a way that only Puligny-Montrachet can. The larger magnum bottle promotes slower evolution, offering a longer window to enjoy this wine at its peak.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Clavoillon shows a bright, luminous straw-gold hue with green reflections, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose opens with classic Puligny signatures: lemon zest, white flowers, and crushed stones, followed by layers of ripe pear, apple skin, and a subtle nuttiness. Delicate notes of freshly churned butter, toasted hazelnut and fine oak spice sit in perfect balance with the wine’s vibrant mineral core.
On the palate, this is precise yet generous, with a silky, layered texture carried by a spine of fresh acidity. Flavors of citrus oil, white peach, and orchard fruits unfold into more complex tones of brioche, almond cream and saline minerality. The finish is long, pure and chiselled, leaving a lingering impression of chalk, citrus and fine oak. In magnum, this 2018 has excellent aging potential: while already approachable with aeration, it should develop further complexity and tertiary notes over the next 8–15 years, and potentially beyond in optimal cellaring conditions.
Production
Domaine Leflaive’s Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon comes from one of the domaine’s emblematic premier cru holdings, rooted in limestone-rich soils with layers of clay that give the wine both tension and texture. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically, with careful, low-intervention practices aimed at expressing the purity of the terroir. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then gently pressed and fermented in French oak barrels, a proportion of which are new, to add subtle structure without overpowering the fruit. The wine typically undergoes aging on fine lees with bâtonnage applied judiciously, followed by a period of refinement in barrel and tank before bottling, to harmonize its aromatic complexity and crystalline minerality.
Food & Serving
This Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon shines alongside refined dishes such as butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, turbot with beurre blanc, or roasted free-range chicken with morel cream. It also pairs beautifully with delicately flavored cheeses like Comté, Beaufort, or aged goat’s cheese. Serve at 11–13°C (52–55°F) to showcase its full aromatic range and tension. In magnum format, decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended in its youth to allow the wine to open and reveal its layered complexity.
