Description

The 2018 Domaine Jacques Prieur Musigny Grand Cru is a powerful yet supremely refined expression of one of Burgundy’s most coveted climats. From a tiny 0.76-hectare holding in the hallowed Musigny vineyard, this 100% Pinot Noir captures the warmth and generosity of the record-breaking 2018 vintage while preserving the site’s hallmark finesse. Fully raised in new French oak, it is a Grand Cru crafted for collectors and serious Pinot Noir lovers alike. Its unique selling point lies in its combination of a top-tier Côte de Nuits terroir, meticulous hand craftsmanship, and an exceptionally ripe, sunny vintage. Musigny Grand Cru is historically regarded as one of the pinnacles of red Burgundy, known for wines that unite floral delicacy with impressive depth and longevity. This 2018 bottling stands firmly in that tradition, offering both immediate seduction and remarkable aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows an intense, deep ruby hue with a vivid purple rim, reflecting both concentration and youth. The nose is all about finesse and lift: ethereal notes of violets and rose petals float above a core of ripe red and black berries, with hints of cherry, wild strawberry, and a fine, integrated toastiness from the new oak. Subtle undertones of sweet spice, forest floor and a touch of mineral tension emerge with air, promising increasing complexity over time. On the palate, the 2018 Musigny Grand Cru feels simultaneously luxurious and precise. Juicy red and dark berry fruit—think raspberries, black cherries and wild berries—coat the mid-palate, framed by very fine-grained, silky tannins. The oak is beautifully judged, adding appetizing toasty notes, gentle vanilla, and sweet spice without overwhelming the fruit. The texture is velvety, almost creamy, with a long, graceful finish that lingers on floral tones and delicate minerality. While already remarkably approachable and “very drinkable” in its youth, this wine has the structure and concentration to evolve beautifully over 15–25 years, and in top cellars potentially longer.

Production
The grapes come from a small, privileged parcel within Musigny Grand Cru, perched on a fault line overlooking Clos Vougeot and bordering the Combe d’Orveau. This southeast-facing slope enjoys a particularly sunny, warm microclimate, with thin, stony soils that offer excellent drainage and store daytime heat, releasing it at night to ensure optimal ripening. In 2018, a record-setting year with low rainfall, exceptional sunshine and average temperatures around 2°C above normal, the fruit reached outstanding maturity. The Pinot Noir grapes were hand-harvested into small crates, carefully sorted, and completely destemmed before fermentation. The must spent 19 days on the skins in temperature-controlled open wooden vats, with twice-daily pigeage (cap punching) to gently extract color, flavor and tannin. Alcoholic and 100% malolactic fermentation took place in barrel, followed by élevage in 100% new French oak for about 19 months, yielding a richly textured yet finely balanced Grand Cru.

Food & Serving
This Musigny Grand Cru deserves thoughtful pairings that respect its complexity and elegance. It shines alongside refined dishes such as roast pigeon or duck, Bresse chicken with truffles, veal or lamb with morel cream, or game birds in a light jus. Earthy accompaniments—black truffles, wild mushrooms, or a simple jus-reduction—highlight its floral and savory nuances, while aged, semi-soft cheeses like Époisses, Langres or a well-aged Comté can also work beautifully. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to preserve freshness and aromatic detail. For current drinking, decant gently for 1–2 hours to allow the bouquet to unfurl; as the wine gains age and complexity, a shorter, careful decant may suffice, or simply allow it to open slowly in large Burgundy stems.
