Description
The 2018 Domaine Jacques Prieur Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru is a pure, site-driven expression of Pinot Noir from one of the most historic hillsides in Burgundy. Sourced from a minute 0.73-hectare plot on the famed Corton hill, this wine marries power and precision, reflecting both its noble terroir and an exceptionally early, sun-drenched vintage. It’s a Grand Cru that seamlessly combines Corton’s structure with the refined elegance for which Jacques Prieur is renowned.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is refined yet intense, with aromas of ripe red and black cherries, wild strawberries and raspberries layered with violet, rose petal, and a discreet touch of sweet spice from the oak. Underneath lie more serious notes of crushed stone, forest floor, and a faint hint of cocoa and fine tobacco.
On the palate, this is a structured and persistent Corton, combining ripe, generous fruit with a firm, mineral backbone. Flavors of cherry, redcurrant and black plum are wrapped in finely woven tannins, with accents of clove, cedar, and savory herbs. The mid-palate is dense yet never heavy, balanced by fresh acidity that carries the wine into a long, saline and subtly spicy finish. Still youthful, this Grand Cru will benefit from several years in the cellar; it should evolve beautifully over 12–20 years from vintage, gaining complexity, silkier texture and more pronounced tertiary nuances.
Production
Corton-Bressandes sits on the sun-favored slopes of the Corton hill, with a south-east exposure that captures the early morning light and promotes optimal, often early, ripening. The soils here are stony clay-limestone, providing excellent drainage and imparting both mineral tension and depth to the Pinot Noir. In 2018, grapes were harvested by hand at peak maturity and carefully placed into small crates to preserve berry integrity before being meticulously sorted and fully destemmed. Vinification took place in temperature-controlled open oak vats, with a 21-day maceration on the skins and twice-daily pigeage (punching down) during alcoholic fermentation to extract color, tannin, and aromatic complexity. The wine then underwent 100% malolactic fermentation and was matured entirely in oak barrels, allowing the structure of the Corton terroir and the richness of the vintage to integrate harmoniously.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru is a superb partner for refined, flavorful dishes such as roast duck with cherries, pigeon or quail, veal sweetbreads, or slow-cooked lamb shoulder with Provençal herbs. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, such as porcini risotto, truffled poultry, or a simple plate of roast root vegetables and wild mushrooms, and with aged semi-hard cheeses like Comté or Tomme. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to unfold; with maturity, a gentle splash decant shortly before serving will be sufficient.
