Description
Bottled in an impressive 1.5L format, the 2018 Domaine Faiveley Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts Magnum showcases one of Burgundy’s most revered white wine terroirs at full, luxurious scale. This is a pure Chardonnay from a premier cru parcel that borders Meursault, crafted by one of the region’s most respected family estates. Combining crystalline minerality with understated richness, it delivers a classic, ageworthy expression of Puligny-Montrachet that will shine on the table today and evolve beautifully in the cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru presents a bright, luminous straw-gold hue with subtle green reflections, hinting at both ripeness and freshness. The nose is charming yet refined, opening with citrus zest and lemon curd, followed by notes of ripe pear, white peach and hints of exotic fruit. Delicate toasty nuances from the oak – think warm brioche, vanilla pod and lightly roasted hazelnut – wrap around a core of flinty minerality.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet impeccably balanced, with a creamy, silk-smooth texture supported by a precise, saline backbone. Layers of citrus, stone fruit and subtle tropical tones are intertwined with chalky minerality and discreet oak spice, giving length and complexity. The finish is long, harmonious and aromatic, lingering with notes of citrus oil, toasted almond and wet stone. In magnum format, this 2018 has excellent aging potential: it is already highly enjoyable now, but will develop further nuance and depth over the next 8–15 years, gaining more honeyed, nutty and truffled complexity with time.
Production
Les Referts is a premier cru vineyard of about 5 hectares situated in Puligny-Montrachet, directly adjoining Meursault and facing south-east, giving it excellent exposure to the morning sun. The soils here are light and thin, scattered with stones and limestone scree, a classic Puligny terroir that naturally channels elegance, tension and minerality into Chardonnay. For this cuvée, Domaine Faiveley harvests 100% Chardonnay grapes by hand, with an initial strict selection in the vineyard and a second sorting at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit is used. The must is gently pressed using pneumatic presses to preserve delicacy and purity of aroma. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, 40–50% of which are new, over a period of around four weeks in temperature- and humidity-controlled 19th-century cellars. The wine then matures on its fine lees with regular bâtonnage for 17–18 months, gaining texture, aromatic complexity and depth while retaining the precision and minerality that define Les Referts.
Food & Serving
This is a superb gastronomic white Burgundy, ideal for refined dishes where richness meets delicacy. It pairs beautifully with lobster, langoustines and other fine shellfish, creamy fish dishes, roast poultry with morels, and elegant preparations of rabbit or veal. It is also a classic match for foie gras served with a light, savory preparation, and for aged alpine cheeses such as Beaufort or Comté, where its creaminess and minerality complement the nutty, savory notes of the cheeses. Serve at 11–13°C (52–55°F) to allow the full aromatic spectrum to unfold. In magnum, a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes before serving can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, though careful pouring directly from the bottle is equally suitable for those who prefer maximum precision and tension.
Producer
Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy’s benchmark family estates, now spanning around 120 hectares of vineyards across some of the region’s most prestigious appellations, including Gevrey-Chambertin, Pommard, Volnay, Puligny-Montrachet and Chablis Grand Cru. Over generations, and particularly under the guidance of Joseph Faiveley, the domaine became a global ambassador for Burgundy, known for wines that marry clarity, elegance and terroir-driven character. Today, Faiveley owns around 10 hectares of Grand Cru and nearly 25 hectares of Premier Cru holdings, and is widely recognized for integrating modern precision in the cellar with time-honoured traditions in their historic 19th-century caves. Celebrated critics such as Michel Bettane and Thierry Desseauve have praised the domaine as an estate of very high quality that embodies the full glory of French viticulture, and Les Referts stands as a shining example of their mastery of great white Burgundy.
