Description
Bottled in an impressive magnum format, the 2018 Domaine Faiveley Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley Grand Cru Monopole is the undisputed flagship of this historic Burgundy estate. From a unique, family-owned Grand Cru monopole on the slopes of Corton, this Pinot Noir marries depth, power and refinement in a way few wines can. Since 1935, Clos des Cortons Faiveley has held the rare privilege—shared only with Romanée-Conti—of bearing its proprietor’s name on a Grand Cru Clos, underscoring its singular status in Burgundy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2018 Corton Grand Cru shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue, enhanced further by the magnum format which preserves its youthful intensity. The nose is complex and layered, unfolding with aromas of cassis and dark berry fruit intertwined with notes of baking chocolate, grilled meat, forest floor and sweet, fine-spun spice.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with an elegant muscularity—at once rich and concentrated yet impeccably balanced. A ripe core of dark fruit is framed by powdery, well-shaped tannins and a lively line of acidity that gives the wine tension and length. Subtle oak nuances from fine-grained, lightly toasted barrels contribute hints of cocoa and spice without overwhelming the fruit. Long, expansive and still tightly coiled, this is a deep, intense Clos des Cortons that will reward patience: in magnum, it has excellent aging potential and is best enjoyed after several years of cellaring, with the capacity to evolve gracefully for 15–25 years or more.
Production
Clos des Cortons Faiveley is a walled Grand Cru monopole on the Corton hill in the Côte de Beaune, where limestone-rich soils and ideal exposures give Pinot Noir both structure and aromatic complexity. Faiveley meticulously hand-harvests the grapes, selecting only the best clusters in the vineyard before they undergo a short pre-fermentation maceration to enhance color and aroma. Vinification takes place partly in wooden vats shaped like truncated cones, followed by about 18 days of fermentation on the skins. After pressing in a vertical press, which yields exceptionally pure, high-quality juice, the wine is aged for 16–18 months in the estate’s 19th-century vaulted cellars in Nuits-Saint-Georges. Around 50% new French oak from top coopers—chosen for their fine grain and gentle toasting—is used to bring finesse and subtle complexity to the finished wine.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru red Burgundy deserves equally fine cuisine. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, duck breast, pigeon, veal, or beef tenderloin, and is superb alongside game birds, dishes featuring mushrooms or truffle, and refined preparations of venison or hare. Mature hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gruyère also make an excellent match. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F); in its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours helps the wine open up and soften the structure, while older bottles should be decanted gently, mainly to remove sediment, shortly before serving.
Producer
Founded in 1825, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy’s great family-owned estates, now in its seventh generation and based in Nuits-Saint-Georges. With 127 hectares of vineyards spread across the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise—including 12 Grand Crus, 25 Premier Crus and 6 monopoles—Faiveley is a major reference point for classically styled Burgundies. Under the guidance of Erwan Faiveley, the domaine combines meticulous vineyard work and hand-harvesting with modern oenological precision and traditional élevage in French oak barrels in their historic 19th-century cellars. This thoughtful blend of heritage and innovation has secured Faiveley a reputation for producing wines of depth, purity and longevity, with Clos des Cortons Faiveley standing at the very pinnacle of the portfolio.
