Description
2018 Domaine du Clos de Tart Grand Cru Monopole is one of Burgundy’s great icons, crafted from a historic walled vineyard that has been tended as a single estate for centuries. In this warm, generous vintage, Clos de Tart delivers a wine of impressive power and depth, yet with the signature finesse and silkiness that has made it legendary. As a rare Grand Cru monopole – owned and farmed exclusively by Domaine du Clos de Tart – it represents a singular and unmistakable expression of Morey‑Saint‑Denis terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Clos de Tart Grand Cru shows a deep, vibrant ruby colour with a youthful, almost velvety sheen, hinting at its concentration and intensity. The nose is complex and layered: generous red berries lead the way – think wild strawberries, red cherries and raspberries – followed by poached plum, black cherry and a touch of darker fruit with air. Floral notes of rose petals and violet emerge alongside subtle spice, fine oak, and a faint suggestion of forest floor and crushed stone.
On the palate, this is unmistakably a warm‑vintage Clos de Tart: powerful, intense and mouth‑filling, yet impeccably poised. The texture is voluptuous and layered, with ripe, dark‑toned fruit at the core, framed by flavours of red cherry, plum, sweet spice and a hint of cocoa and savoury minerality. The tannins are remarkably fine, soft and silky, giving an almost cashmere-like feel, while the vibrant acidity keeps everything fresh and precise. Still youthful now, it has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully over 15–25 years or more, gradually gaining additional complexity in the form of truffle, dried flowers and gamey nuances.
Production
Clos de Tart is a single, enclosed Grand Cru vineyard in Morey‑Saint‑Denis, on the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, planted to 100% Pinot Noir on a complex mix of limestone and clay with excellent drainage and ideal south‑ to southeast‑facing exposures. The 2018 growing season was marked by a mild winter and spring, plentiful rainfall, and a hot, dry summer, which, combined with deep water reserves in the soil, allowed the vines to grow steadily and ripen perfectly. Budbreak came slightly later than average, followed by rapid growth and an early, even flowering at the end of May. Veraison was well advanced by late July, and the fruit reached full maturity without stress despite the heat. Harvest began early, on 30 August, and continued through 3 September, with meticulous selection of berries showing thick skins, beautiful aromatics and fully ripe tannins. In the cellar, the wine was vinified with great care to preserve purity and finesse, then matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, about 80% of which were new, before bottling in May 2020 to capture its balance of richness, fragrance and structure.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Pinot Noir calls for refined, flavourful dishes that can match its depth without overpowering its elegance. Think roast duck breast with cherries, pigeon or quail, veal sweetbreads, slow‑roasted lamb, or game birds with truffle jus; for a more classic Burgundian pairing, try coq au vin or roast chicken with morels. It also shines alongside earthy dishes like mushroom risotto, porcini ravioli, or aged hard cheeses such as Comté or matured Gruyère. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to allow the aromatics to fully unfold. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to help the wine open up; as it ages and develops more tertiary notes, a gentler splash decant (or simply opening the bottle 30–45 minutes before serving) will usually suffice.
Producer
Domaine du Clos de Tart is one of Burgundy’s most storied estates, with records of the Clos dating back to the 12th century, when it was established and cultivated by Cistercian nuns. Remarkably, the vineyard has remained almost intact as a single property for more than 800 years, making it one of the rare Grand Cru monopoles in the Côte d’Or and a benchmark of Morey‑Saint‑Denis. Today, the domaine is known for its meticulous, almost obsessive attention to detail in both vineyard and cellar, including careful parcel-by-parcel work and a thoughtful use of new oak. Its wines regularly feature among the most sought‑after and highly rated in Burgundy, praised for their combination of power, longevity and finely wrought elegance.
