Description

2018 Pagodes de Cos is the sophisticated second wine of the famed Château Cos d'Estournel, offering a true taste of Saint-Estèphe pedigree at a far more approachable price than the Grand Vin. This is a beautifully crafted Bordeaux blend that captures the château’s opulent, spice‑tinged style while remaining open and inviting in its youth. Combining modern precision with a long-standing grand cru heritage, it’s an excellent choice for those seeking serious Left Bank character without the collector’s price tag.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Pagodes de Cos shows a medium to deep garnet-purple hue, signaling both concentration and youthful energy. The nose is expressive and layered, with vivid notes of wild blueberries, redcurrants and redcurrant jelly, unfolding into warmer tones of cassis, licorice and bouquet garni, all accented by a subtle hint of cinnamon and sweet spice from its time in barrique. On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied wine with a core of ripe black and red fruits supported by firm, fine-grained tannins and a refreshing line of acidity. The structure is polished yet clearly defined, giving the wine both immediate drinkability and the framework to evolve. The finish is long and persistent, marked by lingering spice and savory herbal nuances. While already enjoyable with a decant, this vintage has solid aging potential and should continue to develop complexity over 8–12 years from vintage, and possibly longer in good cellaring conditions.

Production
Sourced from the gravel and clay-limestone soils of Saint-Estèphe in Bordeaux, Pagodes de Cos benefits from the same meticulously tended vineyards that feed the Grand Vin of Château Cos d'Estournel. The 2018 blend brings together approximately 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, reflecting the Left Bank’s classic profile with a slightly more approachable tilt. Harvesting is carried out with careful selection to ensure only optimally ripe, healthy grapes make it to the cellar. Cos d'Estournel is renowned for its ultra-modern, gravity-flow winery, where the wine is moved without pumps to preserve purity and finesse. Fermentation is conducted in temperature-controlled vats, followed by aging in French oak barriques, around 20% of which are new, giving structure and subtle spice without overwhelming the fruit.

Food & Serving
2018 Pagodes de Cos is a versatile partner at the table, particularly well-suited to roasted or grilled red meats, lamb chops with herbs, duck breast, and hearty dishes like beef stew or braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and refined structure. For current drinking, decant for 45–90 minutes to soften the tannins and allow the wine’s layers of fruit, spice and herbs to fully emerge.

Producer
Château Cos d'Estournel is one of the most illustrious estates in Saint-Estèphe and holds the prestigious 2ème Grand Cru Classé status from the 1855 Classification. Its founding figure, Louis Gaspard d’Estournel—nicknamed the “Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe” for his exotic tastes—adorned the estate with distinctive Indian-inspired architecture and hosted legendary festivities, imprinting a sense of grandeur and individuality that still defines the château today. Despite his financial ruin and the sale of the property in 1852, the estate’s reputation only grew, and today Cos d’Estournel is recognized for combining cutting-edge technology—such as its state-of-the-art gravity-flow cellar—with meticulous vineyard work to produce some of the Médoc’s most characterful and age-worthy wines. Pagodes de Cos, the estate’s second wine, has become a benchmark in its own right, offering access to Cos d’Estournel’s signature style and terroir at a more accessible level while consistently earning critical acclaim vintage after vintage.
