Description
The 2018 Château Tertre Roteboeuf Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is one of Bordeaux’s most singular and compelling right-bank wines, crafted on a tiny 5.6-hectare amphitheatre of south-facing clay-limestone slopes in Saint-Laurent-des-Combes. Intensely characterful, it marries luxurious ripeness with remarkable freshness and complexity, offering a profile that feels both hedonistic and deeply classical. In an era of polished uniformity, François Mitjavile’s refusal to join the “Bordeaux circus” has made Tertre Roteboeuf a true insider’s cult wine, praised by critics for its originality and longevity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Tertre Roteboeuf is deep, opaque ruby with a vibrant garnet rim, signalling both concentration and energy. The nose is immediately expressive and layered: cassis, ripe blackberries and black cherries lift from the glass, interwoven with shades of violets, cigar box, sweet exotic spices, and a touch of warm earth and truffle. Subtle notes of cocoa, cedar, graphite and mulchy forest floor emerge with air, underlining the wine’s complexity and hinting at its evolution to come.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, rich and enveloping, yet never heavy. Ultra-ripe Merlot fruit delivers a plush core of black and red berries, while Cabernet Franc adds lift, floral tones and a savoury edge. The texture is strikingly sensual: velvety, fine-grained tannins wrap around a deep, concentrated mid-palate, balanced by a lively, mouth-watering acidity that keeps everything precise and vibrant. Flavours of black cherry liqueur, cassis, violet, tobacco, baking spices and earthy minerality fan out in long, resonant layers. Already seductive in its youth, the 2018 has the structure and inner freshness to reward at least 10–20 years of cellaring, with the potential for intriguing secondary and tertiary nuances to develop over time and even show renewed life after periods of seeming maturity.
Production
Château Tertre Roteboeuf sits on a natural amphitheatre of south-facing clay-limestone slopes just outside the heart of Saint-Émilion, a terroir that concentrates sunlight, retains freshness and gives the wine its signature combination of richness and tension. Merlot and Cabernet Franc vines are cordon-pruned and trained unusually low to the ground, enhancing warmth and ripening, and the grapes are picked as late as possible to achieve what François Mitjavile calls the “lush breakdown” of tannins—maximum phenolic maturity without losing vibrancy. In the cellar, vinification is deliberately traditional: relatively warm fermentations are carried out without strict temperature control, and the wine is then raised in new French oak barrels (notably from Tonnellerie Radoux) in a cellar that follows the natural seasonal temperature shifts. Mitjavile’s philosophy is that truly original wines are, paradoxically, the most traditional, and this hands-off approach allows the terroir and the vintage to speak with clarity.
Food & Serving
The opulent yet fresh style of the 2018 Tertre Roteboeuf makes it an outstanding partner to richly flavoured dishes. It shines alongside roast or grilled lamb, slow-braised beef or veal, game birds such as duck or pigeon, and dishes with earthy accents like truffle, wild mushrooms or root vegetables. Classic French preparations—lamb saddle with rosemary and garlic, beef short rib in red wine, or pigeon with foie gras—will mirror the wine’s depth and texture. Mature hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or well-aged Manchego also work beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux stems. Decanting for 2–3 hours in its youth helps the aromatics unfurl and allows the tannins to soften; older bottles should be decanted more gently and for a shorter time, primarily to remove sediment.
Producer
Château Tertre Roteboeuf is the life’s work of François Mitjavile, one of the most independent and philosophically minded figures on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Taking over the family property in the late 1970s and renaming it Tertre Roteboeuf, he transformed this relatively modest Saint-Émilion estate into one of the region’s most admired and distinctive producers, prized by collectors and critics for its singular style. Mitjavile’s rejection of modern, highly standardized winemaking in favour of late harvesting, traditional élevage and a focus on aromatic complexity and textural sensuality has set Tertre Roteboeuf apart as a true cult estate. The family also owns Domaine de Cambes and Roc de Cambes on the Right Bank, where the same dedication to expressive fruit and harmonious freshness has cemented their reputation as some of Bordeaux’s most original and consistently top-rated wines.
