Description

The 2018 Château Smith Haut-Lafitte Grand Cru Classé de Graves is a powerful yet polished red from one of Pessac-Léognan’s undisputed stars. Born from old vines and crafted with meticulous care, it captures the distinctive gravelly elegance that has made this estate a benchmark in Graves. This vintage marries depth, freshness and refinement, offering a modern expression of a historic Bordeaux château whose roots in the region stretch back centuries.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Smith Haut-Lafitte shows a deep, almost opaque garnet core with a vibrant violet rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is immediately expressive, layering ripe raspberry and blackcurrant (cassis) with lush blackberry compote, all framed by subtle notes of fennel, dried herbs and delicate floral tones. With air, more complexity emerges: hints of graphite, warm gravel, sweet tobacco and fine spice from its élevage in oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, yet remarkably suave. The blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot delivers a core of dark berry fruit—black cherry, cassis and blackberry—wrapped in finely-grained tannins and a vibrant, mineral-driven freshness. Notes of cocoa, cedar, liquorice and dried thyme add layers on the long, persistent finish. This 2018 has the concentration and structure to age gracefully for 15–25 years or more, while already showing impressive harmony after proper aeration.

Production
Château Smith Haut-Lafitte’s vineyards sit on the quintessential Graves terroir: deep layers of gravel resting on sand and clay, creating excellent drainage and reflecting heat to the grapes, while the patchwork of microclimates around Pessac-Léognan adds nuance and complexity. The estate’s old vines average 48 years of age, naturally limiting yields and intensifying flavor in the fruit. Grapes are carefully harvested and sorted before whole berries are fermented at around 28°C in small oak vats, with regular pigéage (cap punching) to ensure gentle yet optimal extraction of color, tannin and aromatics. After fermentation, the wine is aged for about 18 months on its lees in barriques, 60% of which are new and crafted in the château’s own cooperage, allowing for precise control over oak integration and texture without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This 2018 Smith Haut-Lafitte is a superb match for classic, richly flavored dishes: roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, venison or other game, duck breast with a red wine reduction, and slow-braised beef or veal. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffled poultry, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. For optimal enjoyment in its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to soften the tannins and allow the layers of fruit, spice and mineral notes to unfold; with extended cellaring, a shorter decant will usually suffice simply to wake the wine up.

Producer
Château Smith Haut-Lafitte is one of the most illustrious properties in Pessac-Léognan and a Grand Cru Classé de Graves, with a history dating back to the 14th century and a modern renaissance under current ownership. Located just outside the city of Bordeaux, the estate has long benefited from the gravel-rich soils that define the Graves region and has become a reference point for both red and white wines from the appellation. Over recent decades, significant investment in the vineyards, a strong focus on environmental stewardship, and meticulous attention in the cellar have elevated Smith Haut-Lafitte to the top tier of Bordeaux, regularly earning critical acclaim and cementing its reputation as one of the finest producers in the Left Bank outside the Médoc.
