Description
The 2018 Château Palmer Margaux Grand Cru Classé is one of those rare bottlings that already enjoys near-mythical status. Born from a dramatic growing season and an almost painfully low yield, it delivers a wine of staggering depth, perfume and power. With all vineyard parcels ultimately selected for the final blend and no second wine produced, this is pure, uncompromising Palmer in a historic vintage. Blending 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot from biodynamically farmed vineyards, 2018 showcases an intensity of tannin and aroma rarely seen at the estate. The mildew-affected season forced drastic selection, resulting in a yield of just 11 hl/ha and only around 6,000 bottles produced—about a third of a normal harvest. The estate compares it in concentration to legends like 1961, and many critics already consider it one of the most powerful Palmers ever made.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Château Palmer is an impenetrable, deep purple-black, signaling immense concentration and youth. The nose starts a touch reserved, but with a little time it unfurls in layers: violets, crushed blackcurrants and crème de cassis, followed by notes of black plum compote, hoisin, Christmas cake and red roses. Subtle nuances of cedar wood, forest bark, iron ore, exotic spices and freshly ground black pepper add remarkable complexity as it opens.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, dense and profoundly structured, yet remarkably refined. The tannins are abundant, firm and ultra-fine in texture, giving a velvety grip that frames the rich, dark fruit core. Cassis, ripe black plums and black cherries mingle with savoury undertones of spice, earth and a touch of graphite. The aromatic intensity carries through onto a very long, layered and decidedly spicy finish. With its enormous tannin index and concentration, this wine has superb aging potential—easily 20–30 years or more in a good cellar, and it will likely reach its peak well into the 2030s and 2040s.
Production
Château Palmer lies on the deep Garonne gravels of Margaux, in the heart of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where well-drained soils and proximity to the river provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. In 2018, a wet winter and spring with persistent rain and unusually mild temperatures triggered a severe mildew outbreak, especially challenging under Palmer’s organic and biodynamic regime. Meticulous work in the vines and ruthless selection were crucial; many bunches were lost, but those that remained benefited from a superbly warm, dry summer and an August–September period of sunny days and cool nights that drove exceptional phenolic ripeness. Harvest took place slowly and deliberately from 13 September to 10 October, with each parcel picked at optimal maturity. In the cellar, the team extracted very gently—mindful of record-high tannin levels—to preserve balance, finesse and aromatic definition. Every single plot was deemed of such quality that all were included in the Grand Vin, and no second wine was produced in this vintage.
Food & Serving
This is a commanding, gastronomic Margaux that shines alongside richly flavored dishes. Think classic roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, venison with dark berry sauce, or slow-braised beef cheeks. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, wild mushroom ragouts, and mature hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux glasses. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is highly recommended to allow the nose to fully blossom and the structure to relax; as it matures, a gentle 1-hour decant will help separate any sediment and let its more tertiary notes emerge.
Producer
Château Palmer is one of the most revered estates in Margaux, classified as a Third Growth (Troisième Cru Classé) in the 1855 Classification, yet long considered by many to rival the very top names of the Médoc. The property takes its name from British Major General Charles Palmer, who acquired it in the early 19th century, but its modern reputation has been forged through decades of fastidious viticulture and a strong emphasis on Merlot within a Cabernet-dominant region, giving Palmer its signature opulence and perfume. A pioneer in biodynamic practices on the Left Bank, the château has become a benchmark for richly textured, aromatic Margaux with great capacity for aging. Landmark vintages such as 1961, 1983, 2005, 2009, 2010 and now 2018 have cemented Palmer’s status as one of Bordeaux’s most collectible and critically acclaimed wines.
