Description
The 2018 Chateau Musar Bekaa Valley White is an intriguing, characterful Lebanese white that defies easy categorization—part Mediterranean white, part mature Burgundy, with a personality entirely its own. Crafted from ancient, indigenous grape varieties grown high in the Bekaa Valley, this wine offers layers of texture, spice, and savouriness that reward patient drinkers. Chateau Musar has been a pioneering name in Lebanese wine since the mid-20th century, and this white is one of its most singular and cult-followed bottlings.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Chateau Musar Bekaa Valley White typically shows a deep straw to light golden hue, reflecting both its grape varieties and its maturation. The nose is expressive and complex, with notes of dried orchard fruit (pear, quince, baked apple), citrus peel, chamomile, honeycomb, toasted nuts, and a subtle oxidative, sherry-like edge. Hints of beeswax, lanolin, warm spices and dried herbs emerge with air, along with a gentle smokiness and mineral undertone.
On the palate, this is a textured, full-bodied white with a distinctly savoury profile. Flavours of ripe stone fruit, preserved lemon, hazelnut and honey are balanced by firm acidity and a slightly saline, mineral backbone. The oxidative character adds depth rather than heaviness, giving it a nutty, almost vin jaune–adjacent complexity while remaining unmistakably Musar. The finish is long, dry and layered, with lingering notes of spice, citrus rind and gentle earthiness. Like most Chateau Musar whites, the 2018 has excellent aging potential; it can be enjoyed now for its tension and structure, or cellared for 8–15+ years as the aromatics evolve towards more honeyed, nutty and tertiary complexity.
Production
The grapes for Chateau Musar’s Bekaa Valley White are sourced from old, low-yielding, bush-trained vineyards in the high-altitude Bekaa Valley of Lebanon, where warm, sunny days are tempered by cool nights. Planted on limestone-rich, gravelly soils, the indigenous varieties (traditionally Obaideh and Merwah, thought to be related to Chardonnay and Semillon) thrive in this arid, mountainous terroir, producing naturally concentrated, characterful fruit. The vineyards are farmed with minimal intervention and organic principles. Grapes are typically hand-harvested to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection. In the cellar, the wine is fermented—with a preference for natural yeasts—in a combination of neutral vessels and often old oak, followed by aging that allows gentle oxidative development and integration of texture. The approach is deliberately traditional and low-intervention, resulting in a wine that is both idiosyncratic and a transparent expression of its place of origin.
Food & Serving
This distinctive white is extremely food-friendly, particularly with rich, aromatic and textured dishes. It pairs beautifully with Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine—think grilled fish with herbs, mezze, hummus and tahini, roast chicken with lemon and garlic, lamb shoulder, or spiced vegetable dishes featuring aubergine, chickpeas and olive oil. It also works well with aged hard cheeses, nutty Alpine styles and washed-rind cheeses, as well as dishes with cream or butter sauces where its acidity and savoury depth provide balance. Serve slightly cool rather than very cold, ideally around 12–14°C (54–57°F), to allow the aromatics to fully open. Decanting for 30–60 minutes before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to help the wine unwind and reveal its full spectrum of flavours.
Producer
Chateau Musar was founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar in the Bekaa Valley and has since become Lebanon’s most internationally renowned winery, a symbol of resilience and quality even through decades of conflict. Under the stewardship of the Hochar family, Musar earned a devoted following for its distinctive, ageworthy reds and whites, produced with a philosophy that blends traditional techniques, organic viticulture and minimal intervention. The estate gained global recognition in the 1970s and 1980s, particularly after broad acclaim in the UK and among fine wine circles who embraced its unique, often idiosyncratic style. Today, Chateau Musar is regarded as a benchmark producer not only for Lebanon but for the entire Eastern Mediterranean region, celebrated for its commitment to indigenous varieties, expressive terroir and wines that evolve beautifully over time.
