Le Petit Mouton comes from the vineyards of Château Mouton Rothschild in Pauillac, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, where deep gravel soils over limestone and clay create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. The proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures, helping to ripen the grapes fully while preserving freshness and aromatic complexity. In 2018, the blend—56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc—was sourced from parcels specifically selected for their more forward, approachable style, representing about 26% of the estate’s total vineyard area. Grapes are typically hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. Vinification focuses on gentle extraction to preserve purity of fruit and fine tannins, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (a significant proportion often being one-year barrels from the grand vin), where the wine gains its aromatic complexity, structure and polish.
