Description

The 2018 Château Mouton Rothschild 1er Grand Cru Classé is a benchmark Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates. Crafted predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine captures the power, precision and polish of an outstanding Left Bank vintage while remaining remarkably refined. Elevated to First Growth status in 1973, Mouton Rothschild stands shoulder to shoulder with Bordeaux’s greatest names, and 2018 is already regarded as a modern classic at the estate.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Mouton Rothschild is a deep, opaque granate-purple, almost inky at the core with a vibrant rim that hints at its youthful energy and long life ahead. The nose is intense yet beautifully defined, opening with vivid blackcurrant and blackberry, redcurrant jelly and ripe plum, then unfolding into layers of candied violet, licorice, black tea, and subtle notes of warm earth and graphite. On the palate, the wine is built with the solidity of a “brick house”: medium to full-bodied, dense and tightly knit, yet impeccably balanced. Super-ripe, fine-grained tannins wrap around a core of muscular black fruit—cassis, black cherry and dark plum—lifted by fresh acidity that keeps everything bright and precise. Hints of spice, cocoa, cedar and a lingering, mineral-driven finish speak to its great terroir and meticulous élevage. Still very young, this 2018 has outstanding aging potential; it will reward patience for 10–15 years and should continue to evolve gracefully for 30+ years under proper cellaring.

Production
Château Mouton Rothschild’s vineyards lie in Pauillac, on the northwest edge of Bordeaux along the Gironde estuary, where the mild maritime climate and proximity to the river moderate temperature extremes. The vines are rooted in the region’s famed deep gravel soils, over subsoils of clay and limestone, providing excellent drainage while forcing the roots to delve deep for water and nutrients—ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2018, yields were naturally low, around 28 hl/ha, particularly on the deepest gravel parcels, concentrating flavor and structure. The blend is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, with a trace of Petit Verdot, harvested parcel by parcel at optimum ripeness. After careful sorting, fermentation proceeded relatively swiftly in temperature-controlled vats, followed by early blending (from late November to early December) to harmonize the components. The wine was then aged in high-quality oak barrels, predominantly new, to integrate tannins and add subtle complexity without overwhelming the purity of fruit.

Food & Serving
This 2018 Pauillac is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, game birds, and slow-braised short ribs. It also complements dishes with earthy elements—morels, truffles, roasted root vegetables—as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté, Beaufort or mature Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to soften the structure and allow the bouquet to fully open; as it matures, a gentler 30–60 minute decant will be sufficient to separate any sediment and awaken the wine.

Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most iconic estates, located in Pauillac on the Left Bank of the Gironde. Long recognized for the quality of its wines, it famously moved from Second to First Growth status in 1973, joining Lafite, Latour, Margaux and Haut-Brion as a Premier Grand Cru Classé—a unique promotion in the history of the 1855 Classification. Under the stewardship of the Rothschild family, Mouton has become synonymous not only with opulent, cellar-worthy Pauillac but also with innovation and art, commissioning a different artist each year to design its label. Consistently among the highest-rated wines of the Médoc in top vintages, Mouton Rothschild is a reference point for collectors and enthusiasts seeking the pinnacle of Cabernet-based Bordeaux.
