Description

Château Montrose’s 2018 Saint-Estèphe Grand Cru Classé is a powerful yet exquisitely polished Bordeaux that showcases both the estate’s grand terroir and its commitment to sustainable viticulture. This is a thrilling Left Bank classic, marrying the opulence of a warm, ripe year with the precision and structure that have made Montrose a benchmark in Saint-Estèphe. A finely tuned blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it is already stunning in the glass and built for decades of graceful evolution. The 2018 vintage marks a pivotal step in Château Montrose’s transition to environmentally responsible farming, forged under challenging conditions of intense disease pressure and low yields. Thanks to meticulous vineyard work and perfectly timed harvesting, the estate captured a wine that recalls the fruit generosity of 2009 and the finesse and definition of 2016—an intriguing and highly collectible combination.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Château Montrose shows a deep, intense ruby-red hue, almost opaque at the core, with a vibrant rim that hints at its youth and concentration. The nose is at once delicate and complex: blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry interlace with notes of violet and white flowers, while subtle smoky and graphite tones, gentle cedar, and a whisper of spice emerge with air. On the palate, the wine opens with an attack that is both powerful and remarkably refined, delivering exceptional aromatic richness from the first sip. Layers of ripe dark fruit are wrapped in silky, ripe tannins, giving a sensation of density without heaviness. The structure is classically Montrose—firm and architecturally precise—yet the texture is strikingly suave, gliding across the palate with great length and finesse. Fresh acidity keeps everything in perfect balance, and the finish lingers with notes of black fruit, floral lift and a touch of savory minerality. With its concentration, balance and fine-grained tannic frame, this 2018 has excellent aging potential; it will reward patience over 15–30 years, gradually revealing even greater complexity and nuance.

Production
The 2018 Château Montrose is born from the gravelly, clay-rich slopes of Saint-Estèphe, a terroir famed for producing deeply structured, ageworthy reds with a distinctive sense of place. The vintage was shaped by a wet, mild winter and spring, followed by a warm, dry summer marked by significant water stress from late July—conditions that limited berry size and greatly intensified concentration. Throughout the growing season, the estate pursued its move toward sustainable viticulture despite heavy mildew pressure, accepting lower yields in favor of quality and environmental responsibility. Harvest took place under ideal conditions from 17 September to 5 October, with meticulous plot-by-plot picking to capture optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the unusually small berries (around 20% smaller than average) created a high skin-to-juice ratio, prompting exceptionally careful, finely controlled extractions to preserve elegance along with power. The final blend is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, assembled from free-run juice complemented by a selection of very high-quality press wine lots, resulting in a cuvée of remarkable richness, depth and precision.

Food & Serving
The 2018 Château Montrose is a superb partner for refined, flavorful dishes that can stand up to its structure and intensity. Classic pairings include roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye or Côte de Boeuf, venison or game birds, and slow-braised beef or veal short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, mushroom-based sauces, and hard or semi-firm cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance; if opened in its youth, decant for 1.5–2 hours to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully unfold. As the wine matures, a shorter decant of around 30–45 minutes will generally be enough to awaken its more tertiary, nuanced aromas.

Producer
Château Montrose is one of the iconic estates of Saint-Estèphe and a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) of the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Situated on a prime gravelly plateau overlooking the Gironde estuary, Montrose has long been celebrated for producing some of the most structured, long-lived wines of the Médoc—wines that marry power, depth and a distinctive, noble austerity in youth with remarkable complexity over time. In recent decades, significant investment in both vineyard and cellar, coupled with a serious commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, has elevated quality to even greater heights. Today, Château Montrose stands as a reference point for the appellation, consistently earning critical acclaim and attracting collectors worldwide, while its ongoing shift toward sustainable viticulture underscores its leading role in shaping the future of top-tier Bordeaux.
