Description

Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux 2018 is the benchmark second wine of one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates, offering a taste of first-growth pedigree in a more approachable, yet still ageworthy, expression. Crafted from just 30% of the estate’s harvest, it represents a rigorous selection focused on finesse, purity, and balance rather than sheer power. This 2018 bottling comes from an exceptionally warm and challenging vintage, yet it emerges as a wine of remarkable silkiness, precision, and length—very much in the classical Margaux style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Pavillon Rouge presents a deep, vibrant ruby color with purple hues at the rim, signaling both concentration and youthful energy. The nose is refined and layered: blackcurrant, wild blackberry, and ripe plum are wrapped in notes of violet, graphite, cedar, and subtle tobacco leaf, with a touch of spice and floral lift that’s characteristic of great Margaux terroir. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet exquisitely polished, with a core dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (69%) giving structure, freshness, and length. Merlot (19%) brings a supple, fleshy mid-palate, while the elevated share of Petit Verdot (9%) adds fine-grained tannins, color, and a discreet spicy backbone; a small touch of Cabernet Franc (3%) lends aromatic complexity. The tannins, although at the highest level ever for Pavillon Rouge, are remarkably silky—no harshness or astringency, just a seamless, long, and persistent finish. Enjoyable in its youth after decanting for its perfume and texture, this 2018 has the stuffing to evolve beautifully over 12–20 years, and likely longer in ideal cellaring conditions.

Production
The grapes for Pavillon Rouge 2018 come from the historic Château Margaux estate in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, where deep gravel soils over limestone and clay provide perfect drainage and encourage deep root systems, yielding wines of elegance and aromatic complexity. The 2018 season was one of the warmest since the early 20th century, with heavy rainfall in the first half of the year and pressure from mildew, followed by a long, hot, and dry summer that favored perfect ripening. Budbreak was relatively late, flowering proceeded well despite challenging conditions, and meticulous vineyard work limited disease impact and preserved the best fruit. Harvest of the red varieties took place between 17 September and 13 October under ideal, dry conditions, allowing each parcel to be picked at optimal maturity. Nearly one hundred separate lots were vinified individually, enabling extremely precise selection before blending. Pavillon Rouge is traditionally aged in French oak barrels (a significant portion new but less than the Grand Vin), which refines the tannins and integrates the oak influence without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
The 2018 Pavillon Rouge is a refined yet structured Bordeaux that pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roasted lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, veal chops, or game birds like pigeon or guinea fowl. It also shines alongside earthy accompaniments—truffle-infused dishes, mushroom ragout, and root vegetables—as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and textural finesse. In its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to open fully; as it matures, a gentle 30–60 minute decant mainly to remove sediment will be sufficient.

Producer
Château Margaux is one of Bordeaux’s legendary First Growths, classified in the historic 1855 classification and celebrated worldwide for producing some of the most elegant and long-lived wines of the Médoc. The estate’s history dates back to at least the 16th century, and over the centuries it has become synonymous with finesse, aromatic complexity, and the quintessential Margaux style. Pavillon Rouge, the château’s second wine, was formally established in the late 20th century as part of a drive toward ever stricter selection for the Grand Vin, and it has since become one of the most sought-after second wines in Bordeaux. With a relentless focus on parcel-by-parcel viticulture, precise vinification, and exacting blending, Château Margaux continues to set the benchmark for the appellation, consistently earning critical acclaim and maintaining its status as a reference point for collectors and wine lovers alike.
