Description
The 2018 Château Lynch-Bages Pauillac Grand Cru Classé is a powerful, polished expression of Left Bank Bordeaux from one of Pauillac’s most reliable estates. In this warm, generous vintage, Lynch-Bages delivers its signature combination of structure, intensity, and modern finesse, making it a compelling choice for both collectors and enthusiasts. Classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855 yet long regarded as performing well above its rank, this wine has become a benchmark for age-worthy Pauillac.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Lynch-Bages is a deep, opaque garnet with purple hues at the rim, signaling both youth and concentration. The nose is expressive and complex, opening with blackcurrant, blackberry, and cassis, layered with graphite, cedar, cigar box, and pencil shavings, plus subtle notes of violets, dark chocolate, and a touch of baking spice and smoked earth.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, firmly structured Pauillac, with ripe yet authoritative tannins and a core of dense black fruit—cassis, black cherry, and plum—wrapped in tobacco, cedar, and mineral notes. There’s impressive freshness for the vintage, with lively acidity that keeps the wine balanced and long on the finish, where hints of mocha, licorice, and savory spice linger. While already showing remarkable depth and approachability in its youth, this 2018 is built for the long haul and should evolve beautifully over 15–30+ years, gaining complexity and tertiary notes with proper cellaring.
Production
Château Lynch-Bages is located on the gravelly plateau of Bages in Pauillac, one of the appellation’s most prized terroirs. The vineyards are planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot contributing nuance and dimension. Deep gravel over limestone and clay ensures excellent drainage, promoting deep root systems and naturally low yields, while the proximity to the Gironde estuary moderates temperatures and protects the vines from extremes. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection. In 2018—a warm, concentrated vintage—meticulous sorting was particularly important to retain purity and balance. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with plot-by-plot fermentation to express the nuances of each parcel. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) for around 18 months, allowing the tannins to integrate and the wine to gain complexity and polish before release.
Food & Serving
The 2018 Château Lynch-Bages is a classic partner for rich, savory dishes—think roast lamb with herbs, ribeye steak, venison, or slow-braised beef. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, duck, truffled dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours will help soften the tannins and open up the aromatic profile; as it matures, a gentle 1-hour decant is usually sufficient to remove sediment and allow the bouquet to fully unfurl.
Producer
Château Lynch-Bages traces its origins back to the 18th century and takes its name from the Lynch family of Irish descent and the hamlet of Bages near Pauillac. Classified as a Fifth Growth in the historic 1855 classification, the estate has consistently outperformed its official rank, earning a reputation as one of Pauillac’s most dependable and sought-after wines. Since the mid-20th century, under the stewardship of the Cazes family, Lynch-Bages has undergone extensive modernization in both vineyard and cellar, becoming a flagship property for accessible yet collectible Bordeaux. Widely admired for its powerful, structured style and its ability to age gracefully for decades, Lynch-Bages is considered a reference point in the Médoc and a perennial favorite among serious wine lovers around the world.
