Description

The 2018 Château Léoville Las Cases is a benchmark Saint-Julien from one of the Médoc’s most historic and revered estates, often spoken of in the same breath as the First Growths. This grand vin combines power, precision and remarkable finesse, showcasing the depth and structure that define great Cabernet-based Bordeaux. The 2018 vintage, a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, is already astonishingly seductive, yet built to evolve gracefully for decades.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Léoville Las Cases is an opaque, deep purple-black, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose unfolds slowly and dramatically: at first, intense blackcurrant pastille, wild blueberries and redcurrant jelly, then layers of crushed stones, lavender, Indian spices, unsmoked cigar tobacco, black truffle and a delicate, perfumed note of rose oil. On the palate, this is full-bodied, dense and tightly packed with black fruit preserves and dark, earthy nuances, lifted by bright, energetic red berries and subtle floral sparks. The texture is structured yet refined, framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins that are already beautifully polished. A vibrant, almost ‘sappy’ freshness carries the wine through to a very long, mineral-driven finish. While surprisingly approachable now thanks to its ripe tannin profile, it will benefit greatly from 5–6 years of additional bottle age and has the stuffing to evolve gracefully for 40+ years in a good cellar.

Production
Château Léoville Las Cases sits in the northern sector of Saint-Julien, directly adjacent to Pauillac and the famed Château Latour, on classic, well-drained Médoc gravel over a mix of sand, clay and limestone. The proximity to the Gironde estuary helps moderate temperatures and protect the vines from extremes, contributing to even ripening and exceptional consistency. The vineyards are planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc and Merlot completing the blend, perfectly matched to the gravelly soils that favor deep rooting and low yields. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested and rigorously sorted before vinification in temperature-controlled vats, where traditional methods are employed to capture the character of each parcel. The grand vin is then aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), allowing the wine to gain complexity, polish its tannins and fully express the singular terroir of Léoville Las Cases.

Food & Serving
This is a quintessential fine Bordeaux for the table, superb with classic dishes such as roasted lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, venison or other game, and rich braised dishes like beef bourguignon or veal shank. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, mushroom-based sauces and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and structural finesse. In its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the wine to open fully; as it matures and gains tertiary nuances, a shorter 1–2 hour decant will generally suffice to remove sediment and awaken the bouquet.

Producer
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the oldest and most storied estates in the Médoc, with roots in the vast Domaine de Léoville, once owned by some of France’s wealthiest and most influential noble families. Following the upheavals of the French Revolution, the original property was divided between 1826 and 1840, with Léoville Las Cases emerging from three-fifths of the original holdings and retaining the historic heart of the vineyard first established in the 17th century. The estate was stewarded by the Las Cases family until 1900, when Théophile Skawinski acquired a stake and took over management; since the late 19th century it has remained under the same family’s guidance and is today led by Jean-Hubert Delon, who also owns Château Potensac in Médoc and Château Nénin in Pomerol. Classified as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the 1855 Classification, Léoville Las Cases has long been regarded as a “super second,” producing wines that rival Bordeaux’s First Growths in stature, longevity and critical acclaim.
