Description

The 2018 Château Lafleur Pomerol is one of the most coveted wines from Bordeaux’s Right Bank, hailing from a tiny, 4-hectare jewel of a vineyard in the heart of Pomerol. In a region famed for Merlot, Lafleur stands apart with its near-equal blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, giving the wine an unmistakable signature of power, finesse and haunting complexity. The 2018 vintage has already entered modern legend, with multiple perfect 100-point scores, and is regarded as one of the great Lafleurs of the 21st century.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Château Lafleur is deep, opaque ruby with a vibrant, almost electric rim that hints at its youth and energy. The nose is intensely layered: black cherries, ripe blackberry and blackcurrant jelly unfold first, followed by notes of sandalwood, cedar shavings and pencil lead. With air and time in the glass, more subtle nuances emerge—forest floor, truffle, tobacco leaf and exotic spices—wrapped in a discreet, lifted floral perfume. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet incredibly precise, combining density and weightless refinement in a way only the greatest Pomerols can. Dark fruit—black cherry, plum and blackberry—is interwoven with earthy undertones, graphite, cocoa nibs and savory spice. The Cabernet Franc contributes structure, aromatic lift and a cool, mineral spine, while the Merlot brings plush texture and flesh. Tannins are firm, ultra-fine and tightly knit, promising a long evolution; the finish is long, perfumed and persistent, with lingering notes of violets and spice. This is a wine built for the long term: while already mesmerizing with careful aeration, it will truly begin to blossom after 8–10 years in bottle, and has the potential to age gracefully for several decades.

Production
Château Lafleur’s vineyard lies on the famed Pomerol plateau on the Right Bank of the Gironde, where a complex patchwork of gravel, clay and sandy soils provides exceptional drainage and natural low yields. Unusually for Pomerol, the estate is planted to roughly 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc, giving Lafleur its unique aromatic profile and structural backbone. The 2018 blend is 54% Cabernet Franc and 46% Merlot, sourced from meticulously tended old vines. All fruit is hand-harvested and rigorously sorted to ensure only pristine berries make it into the vats. Vinification is traditional and deliberately low-intervention: fermentation takes place in small vessels, followed by aging in French oak barrels with a high proportion of new oak to enhance texture, depth and complexity. Every step of the process is guided by an artisanal, almost Burgundian attention to individual parcels and micro-terroirs, resulting in a wine of extraordinary character and precision.

Food & Serving
The 2018 Château Lafleur is a grand vin that shines alongside refined, thoughtfully prepared cuisine. It pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, veal tenderloin, beef Wellington, pigeon or duck, as well as earthy preparations featuring wild mushrooms, truffles or root vegetables. Mature hard cheeses, such as aged Comté or old Gouda, can also make an outstanding match. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to unfurl; as it matures and the bouquet develops, a gentler, shorter decant—or simple careful pouring from the bottle—will be sufficient.

Producer
Château Lafleur is one of Bordeaux’s most revered and rare estates, a discreet, family-run property that has long been whispered about by collectors as one of Pomerol’s true insiders’ wines. Nestled near illustrious neighbors such as Pétrus, Lafleur has built its reputation not on grandeur or scale, but on an unwavering pursuit of quality from its tiny 4-hectare vineyard. Historically produced in very small quantities, the grand vin, Château Lafleur, is among the most sought-after wines in the world, while its second wine, Les Pensées de Lafleur, offers a more approachable expression from younger vines. Over the past decades, Lafleur has consistently produced some of the Right Bank’s most profound and ageworthy wines, earning a cult following and a string of critical accolades, including perfect scores in top vintages such as 2018. Its singular style, rooted in equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc and an almost obsessive focus on terroir, has cemented its status as one of the crown jewels of Pomerol.
