Description

2018 Château La Garde Pessac-Léognan Blanc is a finely crafted white Bordeaux that showcases the purity and precision of Sauvignon Blanc from one of Graves’ most respected terroirs. Produced in limited quantities, it combines vibrant aromatics with a chiselled mineral backbone and impressive length. Rooted in deep limestone and shaped by 30-year-old vines, this cuvée reflects the modern renaissance of Château La Garde since its acquisition by Vignobles Dourthe in 1990.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pessac-Léognan Blanc shows a bright, pale straw yellow hue with green reflections, signalling its freshness and youth. The nose is expressive and precise, opening with notes of pineapple, pink grapefruit and honeydew melon, layered with citrus zest and a touch of white flowers and wet stone. On the palate, the wine is crisp and well-balanced, with lively acidity framing flavours of citrus fruit, juicy grapefruit and ripe stone fruit. A subtle, appetising bitterness adds structure, while nuances of green apple echo through the long, clean finish. The Semillon component lends a touch of roundness and depth, smoothing the sharp edges of the Sauvignon Blanc and giving a sense of harmony. This 2018 has the concentration and structure to evolve gracefully for 5–8 years from vintage, gaining more honeyed, nutty complexity while retaining its mineral line.

Production
Château La Garde’s white vineyards lie on a rich mosaic of 27 different soil types across rolling valleys and plateaus overlooking Martillac, with this cuvée rooted primarily in a deep limestone vein that enhances minerality and aromatic precision. The climate is relatively cool for Bordeaux, ideal for preserving the tension and freshness of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, and the average vine age of around 30 years contributes to a naturally low yield and refined fruit quality. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then vinified with a focus on preserving aromatic intensity and texture: the blend is 88% Sauvignon Blanc for purity and drive, and 12% Sémillon for volume and harmony, with careful handling and élevage to bring out length, complexity and a polished, modern Bordeaux blanc profile.

Food & Serving
This 2018 Château La Garde Pessac-Léognan Blanc is a versatile partner at the table, ideal with oysters, scallops, grilled white fish, sushi, and shellfish, as well as goat cheese, fresh cheeses, and light poultry dishes with herbs or citrus-based sauces. It also pairs beautifully with asparagus, fennel, and green vegetable dishes where its citrus and mineral notes can shine. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 10–12°C, to allow its aromatics to fully open. A brief decant of 15–20 minutes in a small carafe can help reveal additional layers of fruit and minerality.

Producer
Château La Garde is a historic estate in the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux, with around 50 hectares under vine split between red and white varieties. Its modern chapter began in 1990, when Vignobles Dourthe acquired the property, drawn by the exceptional gravel and limestone ridge in Martillac and investing heavily to optimise the vineyard parcels and cellar technology. Today, Château La Garde is regarded as a strong value reference in Pessac-Léognan, producing wines that reflect the appellation’s hallmark balance of elegance, structure and minerality, with the white wines in particular earning recognition for their precision, aromatic clarity and ageworthy character.

Value for money

White Bordeaux is generally an overlooked wine, which means you really get a lot for your money!

Chateauneuf La Garde makes Sauvignon Blanc-based white wines in a completely classic white Bordeaux style. Full-bodied, rich, intense and almost oily wines, which only improve with age, make this white Bordeaux an obvious match for intense fish and seafood dishes!

An absolutely fantastic glass of white Bordeaux!
