The nose is serious yet seductive, opening with earthy nuances of freshly turned soil, truffle, undergrowth, and crushed stones, before revealing layers of chocolate pastry, kirsch, redcurrant, and cassis, accented by a delicate graphite and pencil-shaving note. On the palate, this is full-bodied yet exceptionally refined, with an energetic, fresh profile that highlights both red and black fruits—think juicy cherries, ripe plums, blackcurrants, and red berries—wrapped in a soft, rounded texture. Production
Le Clarence de Haut-Brion 2018 is sourced from the gravelly, well-drained soils of Pessac-Léognan, the historic cradle of Bordeaux’s great dry reds. The terroir—deep gravel over clay and sand—naturally limits yields and promotes excellent ripening, giving wines of aromatic complexity and elegance rather than sheer power. The blend in 2018 is 58.2% Merlot, 28.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9.7% Cabernet Franc, and 3.6% Petit Verdot, harvested parcel by parcel between 6 September and 2 October for optimal maturity. Grapes are carefully sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel and traditional vessels, a method pioneered at Haut-Brion as early as 1960, followed by élevage in oak barrels (a significant proportion of which are new), mirroring many of the techniques used for the grand vin to ensure depth, precision, and finesse.

This refined Pessac-Léognan is a superb partner for classic French cuisine and elegant, subtly flavored dishes. Think roasted lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, veal chops, duck breast, or game birds, as well as truffle-infused dishes, mushroom risottos, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. For young bottles, decanting for 1–2 hours helps the layers of fruit, earth, and spice unfold; as the wine ages, a gentle 30–45 minute decant will be sufficient to remove sediment and allow the bouquet to blossom.
