Description

The 2018 Château Gruaud-Larose Grand Cru Classé is a benchmark Saint-Julien from one of Bordeaux’s great historic estates, classified as a Second Growth in the legendary 1855 classification. This vintage marries the château’s hallmark elegance and refinement with the depth and power of an outstanding year in Bordeaux. A blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, it delivers a classically structured, beautifully polished left-bank claret with real aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Gruaud-Larose shows a deep, dark ruby hue with a vivid purple rim, signalling both concentration and youth. The nose is already remarkably expressive, opening with ripe black cherry, mulberry, blackcurrant and plum compote, layered with notes of menthol, lilac, licorice and clove. Subtler complexities emerge with time in the glass: hints of forest floor, fallen leaves and tilled earth that speak clearly of its Saint-Julien origins. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a compact, muscular core of ripe, densely packed dark fruit. The tannins are firm yet refined and grainy, giving the wine structure without harshness, while a lively line of acidity keeps everything fresh and lifted. Flavors of cassis, black cherries and dark plum are wrapped in exotic spice, subtle floral tones and a touch of savory earth, leading into a long, spicy, persistent finish. Still youthful, this 2018 has the balance and backbone to evolve gracefully for 15–25 years, gaining further complexity and integration with time in bottle.

Production
Château Gruaud-Larose is situated in Saint-Julien on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, where its vineyards enjoy a classic Médoc terroir of deep gravel deposits laid down by the Gironde hundreds of thousands of years ago. These well-drained, stony soils—behind Château Branaire-Ducru and beside Château Lagrange—are perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and give the wines their finesse and longevity. The estate’s vines are farmed with a strong focus on sustainability and are in the process of conversion to organic viticulture, emphasizing careful work in the vineyard and respect for the environment. Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness, largely by hand, then sorted meticulously before vinification. The 2018 blend—approximately 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot with additions of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc—was vinified parcel by parcel, followed by élevage in French oak barrels to build texture, complexity and age-worthiness while preserving the wine’s precision and freshness.

Food & Serving
This 2018 Gruaud-Larose is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, beef ribeye or côte de boeuf, duck breast, or veal with mushroom jus. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffled dishes, and well-aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F) to showcase its aromatics and structure. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the complex bouquet of dark fruit, florals and spice to fully unfold; as it ages, a shorter decant primarily to remove sediment will be sufficient.

Producer
Château Gruaud-Larose is one of the historic names of Saint-Julien, recognized as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Long considered one of the key estates of the appellation—historically rivaled mainly by the great Léoville properties—it has built its reputation on wines that combine power with a distinctly elegant, ‘feminine’ character. Since 1997 the estate has been owned by the Merlaut family, who have invested heavily in the vineyards and cellar and have steadily elevated quality, resulting in consistently high critical acclaim in recent vintages. With a strong commitment to organic viticulture and a meticulous approach to winemaking, Château Gruaud-Larose remains a reference point for classically styled, age-worthy Saint-Julien.
