Description
The 2018 Château Figeac Premier Grand Cru Classé is a landmark Saint-Émilion, uniting Right Bank charm with an unusually high proportion of Cabernet for the appellation. From a warm, dry, and perfectly timed growing season, this vintage delivers a wine of remarkable energy, depth, and refinement. Its blend of 37% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc showcases Figeac’s signature style: elegance with real structure and longevity. Among Saint-Émilion’s most coveted estates, Figeac stands out for its gravel-rich terroir, which gives the wine an almost Médoc-like backbone while retaining Right Bank plushness. The 2018 vintage is widely regarded as one of the château’s modern greats, reflecting both meticulous vineyard work during a challenging early season and ideal conditions from mid-summer through harvest. It is a wine with serious cellaring potential and significant historical importance in Bordeaux’s ongoing renaissance of top Right Bank estates.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Château Figeac is deep purple-black, almost opaque at the core with a vibrant, youthful rim. The nose opens with a cascade of black and red fruits: black cherry, wild blueberry, cassis and warm plum. With a little air, more complex layers unfurl—violets, star anise, cocoa nib, black tea, forest floor and a discreet, fine-grained oak spice.
On the palate, this is concentrated yet poised, with a beautiful interplay between ripe fruit and fresh acidity. Black and blue fruits dominate the attack, followed by notes of red cherry, graphite, licorice and dark chocolate. The tannins are very fine, ripe and beautifully coated, hinting at the dark-brown, perfectly lignified seeds achieved in 2018—a rarity even for seasoned growers. The mid-palate is energetic and layered, leading to a long, refined finish that carries notes of violet, spice and mineral freshness.
Aging potential is excellent: while approachable after several hours in a decanter, this wine is structured to improve over 15–30 years, with its aromatic complexity, texture and tertiary notes (truffle, cigar box, undergrowth) expected to evolve beautifully with time.
Production
Château Figeac’s 2018 comes from its unique Saint-Émilion terroir of three gravelly hillocks (Günz-era gravel over sandstone and clay), one of the most Médoc-like soils on the Right Bank. These deep gravel soils warm quickly and drain exceptionally well, favoring Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc—hence the unusually high proportion of these varieties for Saint-Émilion. After a wet and stormy first half of the season, vigilant vineyard work protected the vines until ideal weather set in from mid-July, with dry warmth and clear skies ensuring perfect ripening and healthy fruit.
The grapes were harvested parcel by parcel between 17 September and 12 October, at optimal maturity. Hand-harvesting and strict sorting ensured only the finest berries made it into the vats. Vinification is typically in temperature-controlled tanks, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse and aromatic purity rather than sheer power. The wine then matures in high-quality French oak barrels (a large proportion new), where it gains polish, texture and complexity before bottling at around 14% alcohol, maintaining balance and freshness despite the richness of the vintage.
Food & Serving
This 2018 Figeac shines with refined, flavorful dishes that complement its structure and complexity. Think roasted rack of lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, venison or other game birds, beef Wellington, duck breast with cherries, or classic dishes like braised veal and truffle-infused cuisine. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses (Comté, aged Gouda), earthy mushroom dishes and dishes featuring black truffle or wild herbs.
Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) for optimal balance of fruit and structure. In its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the aromatics and tannins to open fully; as it ages beyond 10–15 years, a gentle 1-hour decant is usually sufficient, primarily to remove any sediment. Use large-bowled Bordeaux stems to showcase its aromatic complexity and layered palate.
Producer
Château Figeac is one of Saint-Émilion’s most storied and distinctive estates, with roots that trace back many centuries and a reputation firmly anchored among Bordeaux’s elite. Classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé, Figeac has long been known for its unique identity on the Right Bank, thanks to its gravel-dominated terroir and its Cabernet-driven blend that gives the wines a noble, almost Médoc-like profile. Over recent decades, sustained investment, meticulous vineyard management and thoughtful modernization in the cellar have elevated Figeac into the very top tier of Bordeaux estates. Today, it is widely admired for producing wines of finesse, freshness and longevity—bottlings like the 2018 standing as benchmarks for what modern, top-flight Saint-Émilion can be.
