Description

The 2018 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Julien is a benchmark Left Bank Bordeaux, marrying classic structure with an almost hedonistic sense of purity and finesse. This is a “super second” at the height of its powers: opulent yet poised, deeply layered yet astonishingly silky in texture. In 2018, Ducru-Beaucaillou delivers a particularly seductive expression of its great gravel terroir, with 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot forming a wine of remarkable grace and longevity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Ducru-Beaucaillou shows a deep, vibrant garnet-purple hue, with an almost opaque core that hints at its concentration and aging potential. The nose unfolds in luxurious layers: ripe cassis, blackberries and black cherries woven with sweet floral notes of violets and rose petals, followed by hints of dried herbs, mint, lavender and a subtle graphite, pencil-shaving edge. As it opens, delicate tones of cedar, cocoa, licorice and a touch of cigar box emerge, giving an impression of both richness and refinement. On the palate, this vintage is strikingly silky and plush for Ducru, with polished, ultra-fine tannins that wrap around a vivid core of blackcurrant, plum and dark cherry fruit. Notes of fresh herbs, crushed stone, espresso and dark chocolate add complexity, while a vibrant acidity keeps the wine lifted and precise. The finish is long, pure and persistent, echoing floral and mineral nuances. Although already remarkably charming in its youth, this is a wine built for the long haul, with the structure and balance to evolve beautifully over 20–30 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou takes its name from the ‘beautiful pebbles’—the deep deposits of Günzian gravel that define the estate’s Saint-Julien terroir overlooking the Gironde estuary. These well-drained, heat-retaining stones sit atop clay and sand, creating ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon to reach perfect ripeness while preserving freshness and aromatic complexity. In 2018, as usual, the grapes were harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to retain only pristine fruit. The blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot was vinified in temperature-controlled vats to preserve purity of fruit and extract fine, ripe tannins, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a high proportion new) for around 18 months. This careful maturation polishes the wine’s texture and integrates subtle oak spice, without overshadowing the character of the terroir.

Food & Serving
The 2018 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a classic partner for refined red meat and game dishes: think roast lamb with rosemary, grilled ribeye steak, venison loin, or duck breast with a red wine reduction. It also shines alongside truffle-infused dishes, wild mushroom ragù, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Manchego or mature Cheddar. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours helps the wine unfurl its full aromatic and textural complexity; as it gains bottle age, a gentle 1-hour decant will typically be sufficient to remove sediment and allow the bouquet to blossom.

Producer
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is one of the most revered estates in Bordeaux, classified as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the historic 1855 Classification and often cited as one of the archetypal “super seconds” of the Médoc. Located in the heart of Saint-Julien, the property traces its origins back to the early 18th century and has, over time, built a reputation for combining power, precision and longevity in its wines. Under the stewardship of the Borie family—most notably Bruno Borie in recent decades—Ducru-Beaucaillou has invested heavily in vineyard management and cellar technology, further elevating quality and consistency. Today, the château stands as a benchmark for the appellation, regularly receiving top accolades from international critics and collectors for its refined, terroir-driven expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon-based Bordeaux.
