Description
The 2018 Château Cos d'Estournel is a commanding Saint-Estèphe from one of Bordeaux’s most visionary estates, a wine that marries cutting-edge precision with grand cru heritage. Classified as a 2ème Grand Cru Classé in 1855, Cos d’Estournel is famed for its exotic château and equally exotic depth in the glass. The 2018 vintage is already hailed as one of the estate’s greats—immensely powerful, yet impeccably refined, with the structure to age for decades.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Cos d’Estournel shows a deep, opaque purple-black hue, hinting immediately at its concentration and youth. The nose is intense and layered: crème de cassis, ripe blackcurrant and stewed plum meet wild blueberries and chocolate-dipped cherries, with complex accents of Sichuan pepper, star anise, clove oil, sandalwood, and a subtle charcoal minerality.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, dense, and muscular, with tightly packed black fruits and savoury, earthy undertones unfolding in slow layers. The tannins are superfine, ripe and grainy, giving both power and polish, while a seamless line of freshness keeps the wine vibrant and poised rather than heavy. The finish is very long, deeply earth-driven and elegantly spicy, promising even greater nuance with time. This 2018 Cos d’Estournel is built for the long haul, needing around 7–10 years in bottle to truly open, and should easily evolve gracefully for 40 years or more.
Production
The vineyards of Château Cos d’Estournel lie on the gravelly hill of Cos in Saint-Estèphe, overlooking the Gironde estuary. Deep gravel mixed with clay subsoils provides excellent drainage and natural concentration, particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, while Merlot contributes plushness and depth. The 2018 blend is 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then handled using the estate’s state-of-the-art gravity-flow system, which moves the wine through each stage of vinification without pumps to preserve purity and finesse. Fermentation is precisely controlled, and the wine is aged in French oak barriques, 50% of them new, allowing the fruit, structure and terroir character to integrate with fine-grained oak spice over time.
Food & Serving
This is a grand, structured Médoc that shines alongside equally noble dishes: think dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, slow-braised lamb shanks, venison, or richly sauced game birds. It also works beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, mushroom ragout, and well-aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in generous Bordeaux stems. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended to soften the tannins and allow the aromatic complexity to emerge; as it matures, a shorter, gentle decant to remove sediment will suffice.
Producer
Château Cos d’Estournel is one of the most iconic estates in Saint-Estèphe, instantly recognizable for its exotic, Indian-inspired architecture conceived by its 19th-century owner Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, often called the “Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe.” His visionary approach and flair set the tone for a château that has long balanced tradition with innovation. Awarded 2ème Grand Cru Classé status in the 1855 Classification, Cos has since become a benchmark for powerful yet polished Left Bank wines. Today, it is renowned for its avant-garde, gravity-fed winery, meticulous vineyard work, and consistently high critical acclaim, regularly producing vintages that are considered among the most collectible and long-lived wines in Bordeaux.
