2018 Château Clinet is a polished, powerful Pomerol that captures the richness of Merlot on Bordeaux’s Right Bank in a particularly successful vintage. Crafted from old vines on Clinet’s prime gravel and clay plateau, it delivers both opulence and precision in the glass. Long regarded as one of Pomerol’s benchmark estates, Château Clinet combines centuries of history with a modern, detail‑driven approach to quality.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Château Clinet shows a deep garnet‑purple hue, almost opaque at the core, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose opens slowly at first, then unfurls with insistent layers of ripe black cherries, kirsch, baked plum and blackcurrant, wrapped in notes of cinnamon stick, clove, subtle vanilla and a touch of mocha and crushed violets. On the palate, this is full‑bodied and richly fruited, with a core of luminous, energetic black and red fruit that feels both dense and vibrant. The 85% Merlot provides plush, velvety texture and succulent plum and cherry flavours, while the 15% Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure, freshness and a discreet graphite edge. Fine‑grained tannins are firm yet polished, framing a long, perfumed finish with lingering spice and dark chocolate. This is a wine with serious aging potential: while already compelling with aeration, it will gain complexity and harmony over 10–20+ years in a good cellar.

Production
Château Clinet’s vineyards lie on Pomerol’s famed plateau on the Right Bank of the Gironde, where a mosaic of gravel, clay and iron‑rich subsoils provides ideal conditions for Merlot, supported by smaller parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The estate covers around 11 hectares, planted primarily to Merlot, which thrives in the area’s temperate microclimate. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and undergo meticulous sorting before vinification. Fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve purity and detail of fruit. The 2018 blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon was then aged for about 16 months in French oak barriques, 75% of which were new, adding structure, spice and complexity without overwhelming the terroir expression.

2018 Château Clinet is a natural partner for refined, flavourful dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, tournedos Rossini, slow‑braised beef short ribs, duck breast with cherry or plum sauce, or earthy dishes featuring truffle, wild mushrooms or root vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté or parmesan and well‑matured farmhouse cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–3 hours helps the wine open up its aromatics and soften the tannins; as it ages, a gentle 45–60 minute decant is sufficient to remove sediment and allow the bouquet to blossom.

Château Clinet traces its origins back to the 17th century, when it formed part of the larger Château de la Couronne estate, itself founded in the 16th century. It emerged as a distinct property in the early 18th century under the Constant family, and later gained significant renown under the Arnaud family in the 19th century, who helped establish its reputation as a leading Pomerol estate. Today, Clinet is widely recognised as one of the appellation’s top producers, renowned for powerful yet refined wines that faithfully reflect Pomerol’s unique terroir. With a relatively small, carefully tended vineyard and a focus on meticulous, traditional winemaking, Château Clinet has earned consistent critical acclaim for numerous vintages—among them the legendary 1989 and 1990, as well as modern greats like 2009, 2010, 2015 and now 2018. In addition to its flagship grand vin, the estate also produces the more approachable “Ronan by Clinet,” offering a taste of the house style in a more early‑drinking format.
