Description

The 2018 Château Cheval Blanc 1er Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Émilion is a benchmark Right Bank Bordeaux, uniting sheer power with remarkable finesse. Sourced from one of the most revered estates in the world, this vintage showcases extraordinary concentration, purity of fruit and a layered, almost weightless elegance. A blend of 54% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, it exemplifies Cheval Blanc’s signature style of opulence, freshness and precision. What sets this wine apart is its sculpted structure and astonishing aromatic complexity, born from meticulous micro-vinification of individual plots in state-of-the-art, gravity-fed concrete vats. Long considered a legend alongside Pétrus and Ausone, Cheval Blanc has been classified at the very top of Saint-Émilion as Premier Grand Cru Classé, and the 2018 has been hailed with near-perfect scores (98–99/100 by both Parker and Suckling), confirming its place among the finest wines of the vintage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, 2018 Cheval Blanc is strikingly deep and intense, a dark purple core with vivid violet reflections, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose is highly complex and expressive: lifted floral tones of lilac and violet mingle with ripe red and black fruits—kirsch, raspberry and blueberry reduction—layered with subtle notes of fresh herbs, graphite and impeccably integrated, fine-grained oak. On the palate, the wine is at once powerful and graceful. It opens with a rich, full-bodied attack, delivering a core of vibrant red and blue fruit wrapped in velvety but precise tannins. The mid-palate is expansive and pure, with great clarity of flavor and a striking sense of energy: juicy kirsch, wild raspberry and black cherry are supported by notes of cocoa, spice and a cool, mineral lift. The tannins are very fine, almost powdery, giving structure without harshness, and the oak is perfectly woven into the fruit. The finish is exceptionally long, voluminous and creamy, with lingering freshness and a refined, almost weightless persistence. This is a wine built for longevity. While it can be approached after several hours in a decanter once it has a few more years in bottle, its true potential will unfold over 15–30+ years, gaining further complexity, tertiary nuances and polish with time in the cellar.

Production
Cheval Blanc’s vineyards lie on the Saint-Émilion plateau bordering Pomerol, in a unique mosaic of gravel, clay and sand that combines the elegance of the Right Bank with a structure more often associated with the Médoc. The diversity of terroirs and the high proportion of old vines—particularly Cabernet Franc—enable remarkable complexity and balance in the final blend. In 2018, fruit from 33 of the 43 plots in production was selected for the grand vin, with rigorous sorting ensuring only perfectly ripe, healthy berries were used. Harvesting is done by hand, parcel by parcel, to capture each plot at optimal ripeness. The grapes are then vinified in Cheval Blanc’s ultra-modern cellar, designed by architect Christian de Portzamparc, using 50 specially shaped tronconic concrete tanks. These vats, chosen for their insulating properties and gentle extraction, allow for precise micro-vinification of individual plots. All movement of grapes and must is done by gravity, eliminating pumping and preserving the integrity of the fruit. Fermentation and maceration are carefully tailored to each parcel, yielding exceptional purity, fine tannin texture and aromatic detail. The wine is then aged in high-quality French oak barrels (a significant portion new), where it gains further complexity, harmony and depth before bottling.

Food & Serving
2018 Château Cheval Blanc is a majestic partner for refined, flavorful cuisine. It pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled lamb (rack of lamb with herbs, lamb saddle), beef tenderloin, venison or other game dishes, especially when accompanied by earthy components like truffles, wild mushrooms or root vegetables. Classic French dishes such as pigeon, duck breast with cherry or fig, and veal sweetbreads also complement its complexity and finesse. For cheese, opt for aged hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or a well-matured Tomme. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both aroma and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended to allow the wine to unfold and soften its structure. With more bottle age (10+ years), a shorter, gentle decant—primarily to separate any sediment and give it 30–60 minutes of air—will be sufficient to reveal its full spectrum of aromas and textures.

Producer
Château Cheval Blanc is one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious estates and a cornerstone of Saint-Émilion’s global reputation. Elevated to the highest rank of Saint-Émilion’s classification as Premier Grand Cru Classé, it has long stood alongside names such as Pétrus and Ausone as a pillar of the Right Bank. The estate’s history stretches back to the 19th century, but it has consistently reinvented itself while honoring tradition, notably through its pioneering use of Cabernet Franc as a major component in the blend, giving Cheval Blanc its hallmark perfume and finesse. Owned by Belgian industrialist Albert Frère and Bernard Arnault, Cheval Blanc has seen major investment in quality, including the cutting-edge winery designed by Christian de Portzamparc and the stewardship of director Pierre Lurton, who also oversees Château d’Yquem. Under this leadership, Cheval Blanc has produced a series of legendary vintages that regularly achieve top scores from leading critics. The estate remains a reference point for collectors and enthusiasts worldwide, symbolizing the ultimate expression of Right Bank elegance, complexity and aging potential.
